Found it. After much searching and finding other posts by other people
on other forums, most of which went unanswered, I stumbled upon the
solution.
The solution was surprisingly simple. I don't understand why it
worked, but it did. I simply unplugged the Mac and pressed the Power
button. To my surprise, it made the clicking sound like it was
powering up and the lights on the keyboard flashed for an instant.
Obviously the powerup didn't last long with the computer unplugged.
After a minute I plugged the computer back in.
Once that was completed, I hit the power button again and immediately
zapped the PRAM again as suggested. I have no idea if that was
necessary or not, as I managed to do it on the first powerup. I should
add that I DID zap the PRAM before making the first post and it had no
effect.
Well, after hitting the power button with the computer unplugged and
zapping the PRAM again, the remote started working normally again.
