Just to let you know I have hardly any knowledge on Macs, however I am
improving slightly...
My friend's Mac crashed and burned, however data recovery is going to
cost them quoted at around.. $700 - $1500 smacks to retrieve and stick
on a USB. That's just plain stupid - or isn't it? Recovering data from
a PC is easy, with the IDE/Sata to USB cable... so...
I'm guessing the HDD of a Mac is different and isn't IDE/SATA? I doubt
it. But when quoted that much.. I'm assuming there is a major
procedure or equipment evolved. Lol.
So, are Mac HDD any different than out PCs? Data recovery for a Mac is
simply opening it, taking out the HDD, and extracting info like we
would a PC?

recovering data from a crashed pc drive is *not* easy if there's
physical damage and that's a typical price for a hard drive recovery
service where they open up the drive in a clean room and get the data
off the platters. it doesn't matter what the operating system is.
if the drive just has directory corruption, it's usually relatively
easy to fix, typically something that can be done at home.

macs use sata drives and previously ata/ide drives. all standard parts.

you can do it on a mac with appropriate software and you don't even
need to open the mac most of the time either.
assuming there's no physical damage, the first thing to try is boot off
the system dvd and see if you can see the hard drive. if that doesn't
work, disk warrior is the tool to get. however, i *highly* suggest
finding someone who is familiar with these tools, as you really don't
want to be experimenting on a drive you *need* to recover.
on the other hand, if the drive has physical damage, you have no choice
but to send it to a recovery service, regardless of what operating
system was used.
and next time, make backups.

If it's reasonably recent, you *may* be able to get the data off it
without even opening the case.
