I would like to know if there are any tools for formatting a SCSI Jaz
drive on a Mac Quadra 950 (OS 7.6.1)

The iomega tools (V 5.1.1) installed complains that it cannot quick erase
(format) the drive because files are being shared or used (even though I
have already wiped the drive clean on my Linux/ubuntu system) and the
erase with surface verify (bad block allocation?) is greyed out.

In a nutshell Iomega tools cannot format any jaz cartridge I put into the
drive.
I have checked file sharing is turned off on all the drives by clicking on
the icon and then selecting file sharing from the drop down menu.

What tools can I use to get the MAc formatting this drive again, or how do
I get iomega tools to work properly again?

System is not hooked to internet but I can use the jaz drive as a
"shuttle" between systems.

Thanks

Alp

If you get the same message for any cartridge inserted in that drive,
then you need to make sure that file sharing is turned off globally
(sorry, don't remember which control panel that is in 7.6.1!)

If the problem persists after that, I'd suspect the drive enclosure
may be on its death spiral...

You could always try Disk Utility/Drive Setup (IIRC it would be
Drive Setup on 7.6.1?)

Good luck!

I got the cartridge formatted (Mac format) on a Linux PC, it shows up on
the Mac now and I can save and erase files. BUT...
Iomega tools still cannot format the drive (complains files on the device
are being shared or are in use.)
Of course this is nonsense because there ARE no files on the device. It is
empty.

Will try to find a newer version of Iomega tools, or try to find out about
this Global sharing you mentioned.

Thanks

In the course of formatting it on a Linux PC, did it somehow get
partitioned? Have a look at it in Drive Setup.

Not that I can see.
The full size of the drive (1 gig) seems to be present.
