External HD enclosure doesn't like European current

Hello, I have an external HD enclosure, MacAlly PHR-100AC. It's a
nice, rugged unit with good cooling. The problem I have is that last
summer I took the thing with me to Europe. The power supply is rated
for European current (220V/50Hz) so I just brought along with me a
prong adapter.

I plugged the thing in and long story short, it very rarely worked.
There is an LED on the drive enclosure, it maintains a steady blue
when it is running OK. Instead what would happen over there is that I
would plug it in, the LED would flash blue then quickly shift to red,
then the unit would shut down.

On about three occasions I was able to get the damned thing to work,
by repeatedly unplugging it and plugging it in. About one time out of
100 it would successfully spin up and then for an indefinite period I
could access my files. Sometimes I could even shut it down and start
it up again successfully but sooner or later it would go right back to
before... it would just shut down.

I tried using a power converter to see if maybe converting to American
current would work. Nope!

Has anybody ever run into something like this with an external HD
enclosure? I would hate to replace the whole thing. I think maybe it
is a problem with the power supply. I could go to Fry's or Radio Shack
and see if I could find a generic replacement power supply which is
rated for the same output. What concerns me is that when I used a
power adapter which should have given it American 120V/60Hz current,
it didn't like that either.

To make things more difficult, I can't really test it while I am here
in the US, unless I suppose if I go buy a 120 to 220 converter and
test it running on European current. I'm just not sure that is going
to be very reliable until I actually get there.

Anyway, does anybody have any useful suggestions other than replacing
the external HD enclosure (which seems wasteful to me)? Thanks in
advance...

I forgot to write, the hard drive works fine. When I came back to the
US after my European trip, the whole thing worked just great. The only
time there was a problem was when I tried to use it in Europe, even if
I converted 220V to 110V.
