There were two SEs - the original and the SE FDHD
(which had the 1.4MB "SuperDrive" and a hard drive).
> AFAIK there is no SE20, only SE or SE30.
The 30 in the SE/30 referred not to the hard drive, but
to the CPU - a 68030, instead of the 68000 which was
in the 128, 512, Plus and earlier SEs.

The invoice notes that my DataDesk Keyboard is backordered and that I have
a loaner Apple Standard Keyboard. No price on the keyboard is given.
I think the SE 20 had a 20 meg hard drive. And this was 1989 dollars. For
those whippersnappers who don't grok IW I, that was the original
ImageWriter dotmatrix printer, referred to as the ImageWriter I after the
IW II came out.
I had originally bought a Fat Mac when they came out; 512K of RAM with an
internal 400K floppy; I got an external floppy drive and the ImageWriter in
the long version so I could print 17-inch wide spreadsheets. Later, I got
the modification to 512KE, with the internal drive upgraded to 800K dual-
sided floppies and a new external 800K drive. From there to this SE 20.
Speaking of prices, I also found The Data Bus from July 1988 -- the
newsletter of the Philadelphia Area Computer Society. The Mac SIG article
in the issue says to expect memory prices to go up up up and away! "Expect
to pay at least $1,000 for two megs of RAM." The article notes that at the
last month's meeting, "New System Software - Version 6.0" was
demonstrated, including improvements to Multifinder. Let's see, the Mac
came out in '84, and we were up to Version 6 in '88. Hmmm.... .
Other SIGs included PC-Blue, Amiga, Atari ST, Atari 8-bit, Coco Mini,
Commodore, dBase, CP/M Users, Geos, Paradox, OS/2, R:BASE, Unix, MINIX,
Sanyo, Tandy, plus SIGs for health professionals, desktop publishers,
education/Logo, consultants, investments, and such.
It's amazing to read through the newsletter and see where we've come in 15
years.

That's what I meant to imply. I'm re-printing the invoice, so my guess is
that it's an SE with a 20MB fixed disk.

I didn't write the invoice, I just quoted it. :-)

Our first Mac was an SE with the 800K floppy and dealer installed 30MB
hard drive and 1MB of Ram. I still have it. Haven't tried to boot it up
in many years. I don't think we got it at the Computer Store but it was
some place out in the Philadelphia suburbs. I think we paid about what
you did. I guess you could buy one on ebay for 1/100th the original
price!
Amazingly I could still use it today with System 7.5.5, I maxed out the
RAM to 4MB, ran ClarisWorks 3 and FileMaker Pro 4, plugged in a couple
of external SCSI Hard drives, Apple external CD-ROM and an Imagewriter
II. It would be slow but I could do productive work on it.

If my computer is dual booting does that mean I have to kick it twice?
Want copies of Missile Command, Stunt Copter, Bachman, Brickles, ... ?
Nothing like a nostalgia break now and then!!

A lot of 'em were sold as "SE-20's" as a sales gimmick to separate the
SE from the slower Mac Plus predecessor. I'm not sure if such practices
were Apple endorsed but it was widespread among resellers...

Using Macs since 1985...
I'm actually in the proxess of getting some old games and other old Mac
software ready to put up on ebay.
Anyone want to bid on the orginal balck and white Tetris that came on a
400K floppy? Amazingly it still runs on a G3 under MacOS 9.1. No sound
though, which is the best part of the game.

...but surely a SE 1/20 (I can see it when I turn my head to the
right:-))
Greetings Frank
Apple referred to that config on invoices as "Mac SE HD20."

Already got it. Notice the version of the OS which came with it?

Today, on Paper-view: The World Origami Championship
That was never an 'official' model name scheme, but was used by many people
to refer to the spec of the SE, such as SE 4/40.
I've got an SE/30 with 8Mb RAM, 80Mb hard disk, and internal ethernet. I
only picked it up a couple of months back in a job lot of Macs I won on
eBay. I'd love to find a good use for it, it's so cute! The hard disk keeps
sticking, I have to put the machine on a swivel chair and give it a couple
of sharp turns to get it to boot :-)

Have you looked for a newer disk drive? If nothing else, you could get
one for an external enclosure.
Even two years ago, it would have been better then the Mac LC I
was using. But then I "splurged" on a newer used computer, and it
lost it's usefulness. And then I came into a few newer Macs, that
were better than the SE/30.
I saw an SE/30 for sale at a garage sale last spring, I think with
a sign saying "$50". It was just not tempting at that price, since
at this point I have no use for it. I was tempted to offer considerably
less, to give an orphan computer a home. But I have way too many.
I did buy a Mac Classic for twenty dollars a few years back, as
a spare computer, and maybe terminal. It has not seen any use since
I bought it, but I'll keep it just in case, and it is cute. I scrapped
my Mac Plus because the screen was fading, all those years I left it
on (I got it in '93, and it was obviously used then).

...it is printed to the front by Apple (not just for personal use:-) to
show it is an SE with 1MB Ram and a 20MB harddisk.

...yes they are really cute little machines. And upgradeble up to 128MBs
of ram, which is much more than you can use:-)

do your Mac a favour and give it a new harddisk . Almost any small SCSI
HD will do.

There was a note in the box explaining that the System files were
removed at Apple's "request".

Mine must be older than yours. It came with System 6.0.1, which was
only out for about a week before it was pulled and replaced with 6.0.2,
which was fairly stable.
I've got a 230Mb drive in my Mac IIci - that's also got 32Mb RAM in it, but
the RAM and HD are staying in that machine for now, especially since I
recently bought a 50Mhz '030 card for it. The largest SCSI drives I have are
520Mb, one is in my 7500, the other is in my Amiga 2000. Since I've just
bought a G3/300 for the 7500, I'll want a bigger HD for it, so then I'll
have a spare HD. First I need RAM, the 7500 only has 32Mb, and is desperate
for more.
One day I will get a Mac I can use instead of this PC.....

The stand along box version was labled the Mac IIx. Putting the x after
SE would have been interesting :-).

Yeah, at the time we were hoping they'd do that. It -would- have been
SExy, no?
Also have a Performa 475 (same deal -- shipping and ice cream)
And a Quadra 950.
No, you *can't* have my original Mac. It still works, too!
The 20MB HD was an add-on to the Mac.
Don't forget that their Free Ice Cream Day this year is April 29th,
from noon to eight at all scoop shops, according to their
website at http://www.benjerry.com It's their 25th anniversary
in May. (I'm a bit surprised they don't have it in May, like
they did five years ago. At least it's at the end of April, unlike
about ten years ago when it was in early April and still kind of
cold.)
