I would like to know if there are any tools for formatting a SCSI Jaz
drive on a Mac Quadra 950 (OS 7.6.1)

The iomega tools (V 5.1.1) installed complains that it cannot quick erase
(format) the drive because files are being shared or used (even though I
have already wiped the drive clean on my Linux/ubuntu system) and the
erase with surface verify (bad block allocation?) is greyed out.

In a nutshell Iomega tools cannot format any jaz cartridge I put into the
drive.
I have checked file sharing is turned off on all the drives by clicking on
the icon and then selecting file sharing from the drop down menu.

What tools can I use to get the MAc formatting this drive again, or how do
I get iomega tools to work properly again?

System is not hooked to internet but I can use the jaz drive as a
"shuttle" between systems.

Thanks

Alp

Hm, I think you need the 'IomegaWare 3.5EN to do this. the problem here
is that is is now remowed from the Iomega download pages. You can get it
from me by sending a mail off-list to <NOSPAM...@stofanet.dk> remove
capital letters to make valid. The IOWare 3.5 should also work on system
7.6.x, but if it doesn't work, I also have the older IomegaWare 2.1.1
and somewhere probably also the ver. 2.5. - If you want it, your mailbox
must be able to take an attachment of apprx. 7mb, - else I can send it
via YouSendIt!.

The problems with the obviously open sharing could be a matter of
correct termination or a conflict with the SCSI ID - the same ID already
used by another device. If your Jaz drive is an original Iomega, set the
SCSI ID to '5' and be sure that the terminator is turned 'ON'.

If your drive is a LaCie d2 drive, again set the SCSI ID to '5' and then
be sure that the small termination button down left corner is set to
'AUTO ON'. The SCSI cable should be a Centronics->DB-25 so you can
connect the upper SCSI port with the Centronics plug and the computer
with the DB-25 plug.

If you have the Silverlining 6.0.x or the Silverlining D2, you can also
use one of these to format the cartridges. - Just remember here only to
set the allocation size to 4kb/per block = standard HFS. Both versions
of Silverlining can go as low as 512kb/sector, but if you go that far
down, you won't be able to read any content on any Mac Os - except the
one where you have initialized the cartridge, - unless you afterwards
again re-initialize to std. HFS using either DriveSetup 6.3.x or on a OS
X machine Diskutility - AND you MUSt re-initialize using zero all data
option.

Cheers, Erik Richard

You may have to sacrafice a kid to get it to work. [1]

[1] kid meaning a young goat.

The drive is an internal drive. uses the flat scsi ribbon. It seems to
have some sort of device that plugs into the last socket on the ribbon. I
would guess this is the termination.
The drive shows up as unit 4 (from memory) and is the only scsi device
besides the Hard drive on the mac. I managed to get a cartridge formatted
on a PC running Ubuntu, but I would like to do a low level format so I can
allocate any bad blocks (the linux utilities will not let me do this for a
Mac format).

Thank for the offer for (older?)
Iomegaware. I am a bit confused as to what version I am running. When I
open the Tools utility, I see a 6.2.3 and Copyright 1999 on the bottom of
the "title page" before it is replaced by the Tool window. However, the
"Iomega drive options manual" indicates V 1.4.2

I think I will try to cantact you for a copy of V2 or higher. I hope I can
get it over to the Mac ok, I only have the PC internet connected.

Thanks Erik

Sounds reasonable...

OK, then the selection of ID doesn't matter. Iomega recommends either ID
4 or ID 5. - I've never used an internal SCSI jaz drive - only external
LaCie d2 and original Iomega units. I have never had problems so far
with the LaCie, but real many problems with the Iomegas, because they
use another interface than my SCSI cards - 68-pins Adaptec 2940U2B WideSCSI.

Yes, I have got your mail and sent it back again to the address you gave
with the IomegaWare 3,5 attached. Hope you succeed else just write back
to me again, and I'll send you some of the other versions that i have.

cheers, Erik Richard
