Hello,

I have been copying Windows95 files from my Jaz drive (attached to the
Mac's external SCSI port) to a desktop folder and then sharing the files
with Windows95 on the PC Compatibility card.

I have a Power Mac 9600/233/OS8 with Apple's 166 MHz PC Compatibility
Card and Windows95 installed in a bootable file container on the Mac
main drive.

Is there a way to access the files on the Jaz drive in a more direct
manner from Windows95?

Also, I understood from the install directions of the PC Compatibility
Card, that the bootable file container on the main Mac drive was
preferred over the file container being on the removable Jaz drive
itself. Because of possible read/write problems. Does that seem to be
the case out there in "real" every day use?

Also, can the bootable file container on the main Mac drive be expanded
to the Jaz drive and use "D" or will that do away with my existing file
container on the main Mac drive?

I've managed to get about everything else going without conflicts. Like
using the Mac Modem from Windows for Internet stuff. Sharing one HP
printer: another PC on one cable / the Mac and the PC
Compatible/Windows setup sharing the other cable to the printer.

(The Parallel and Serial Port Card is not out yet for the PC Compatible
Card. I do have an order in for one.)

I came from PC to Mac just a few months ago because of the advertising
that Mac could do Bill's stuff better than a PC and I'll say "This is a
very interesting new world over here. I love it!"

Thanks for any suggestion you all may have.

WELCOME TO THE MAC TEAM! GLAD TO HAVE YOU!!!!

In response to your question, I have a Performa 640 CD (68040, far cry
from a 9600!) with a 486DX2 66 MHZ card and its older, but I use my Iomega
Zip drive with it occasionally. The only problems I had is PC's access
time for the zip was unbearably slow for some applications. I use drive
C: as a 1.6 gig file and I put in a PC zip disk and told the
pc-setup(under the scsi device option on the popup menu for Drive D:) to
use drive D: as the zip disk, I left the zip disk with the default name
"zip-100". From them on, whenever I put in a disk (I keep all my PC zips
named "zip-100") they are automatically hooked up to my DOS card! I
imagine it works much the same for Jaz disks. My card is older than yours
and I have a zip drive instead of a jazz so your situation may well be
different, but I don't see why it would not work out and a Jaz is LOTS
faster than a zip so access time might not impact you like it does me.
Good luck!!!

*response below - plus DirecPC for Mac

Arcturax,

I replied to you by email before I saw your response posted to the news group.

I will "copy/paste" my reply below, so that others may benefit from it, too.

I went to "D"and Drive Partition and the PC Setup did it in a flash. I can see my
Windows95files on the Drive D that was set up in the PC Compatible's Windows95
just fine. I copied a program ".exe" file from it and set it up in Windows95 just
great. Then, I copied a program ".exe" file to the Jaz cartridge in Drive D, went
back to Mac and ejected it.

I put the ejected cartridge in my "WinTel" machine, booted it up (Oh! It was a
bootable Jaz disk I was working with.) and set the program up that I had
transferred to it.

I'm just real pleased with the way it works!

One time I did seem to loose the setup that I did in the PC Setup for Drive D to
handle this Jaz drive stuff. May have been after the Jaz disk was ejected and the
Mac had been rebooted. I just happened to notice it later when I went back for
something. I looked in the Mac HD folder for it and didn't find it. So, I just set
it up
again and everything was fine. It didn't take but a few seconds and it's holding
fine now.

I'll watch it for errors till I get a little more familiar with the setup.

This is much better than the way I was transferring files from the WinTel machine
to Mac's PC Compatible / Windows95 setup. I was copying the files to a "shared"
folder. (But, that's a really nice way to do it, too. In spite of the funky names
some
files get in the process. :)

Well, I've got two good ways to do it now!

I use the Jaz primarily to transfer downloaded files from the Internet via a
WinTel
machine, Jaz drives and DirecPC's satellite connection. DirecPC does not support
Mac and I sure wish they did. I will be getting in a DirecPC PCI card with
Windows95/NT software soon. It's a new product and should be ready for
shipment later this month. Up to now DirecPC has been available with ISA card
only.

When it gets here, my Mac/PC tech and I will take a look at the li'l beauty, check

the bussing and (if agreeable) plug it into this Power Mac 9600/233 PC Compatible.

DirecPC has no intentions of support for Mac and Mac drivers can not be had that
I know of. But, We're going to see what it will do. Maybe some sort of
"relationship" can be found between the PC Card and the DirecPC card. I think the
first PCI slot that I will try is the one for the Parallel and Serial Card. Mac's
instructions for its install is very specific on the slot placement so I figure
there is
some "sort" of dedication going on there.

I've written to Mr. Steve Snell <sn...@apple.com> a few times on the
possibility/impossibility of DirecPC in the Mac before I bought a Mac, a few
months ago. I explained that it was only available as ISA, no Mac software was in
the making and the cost was no problem. He said if there was a PCI card or a
RS-232 connection, it would be possible. But, at the time, only the ISA card was
available. Now that I will be in the possession of a PCI card, I get no replies to
my
inquiries. :(

So, we'll just do it on our own and whoever wants to get involved can.

I can use my WinTel machine with WinGate as a proxy server for the Mac but I'd
like to see the card in the Mac itself.

Well, I won't bore you to tears with all of this. :) But, if you guys are
interested, I'll
keep you posted on what we find.

Thanks again for all the help. I sure do appreciate it.

Oh!

Goody, goody, goody! I was hoping to read something just like this!

I got a print of this for posterity.

I have to disconnect my PC from the Jaz drive and plug it into the Mac before I
can go to work on it but I'm getting used to that. I've got two Jaz drives out
for replacement but they'll be back soon and then it will be more convenient. Ha!
I had to borrow the Jaz drive from the Mac to run the poor PC on while they are
gone because I don't have a fixed hard drive in the thing.

I'll be sure to remember to leave the default name on the Jaz drives too.

Thank you so very much. I sure do appreciate this information!
