Got a question I am hoping someone can help me with... I recently bought a
5300 CS to replace my ancient PB100 (oooooohhh), and am unable to get it to
mount onto the desktop of my SE/30 in SCSI Disk Mode. Instead I get a
message that because the volume is over 4 GB I need an 040 or PPC processor.
Funny thing is that the hard drive inside the 5300 CS is only 790 MB. I
tried this with a friend's 5300 CS, with a similar sized hard drive, and
that one works fine. What gives?

Also, can I run system 7.5 on the 5300 CS? It came with 9.1 but few if any
of my older apps will run on that level OS. And where can I get disk
formatting utilities that will work with an ATA drive?

Thanks in advance,

Dave Beane

Crap. What I meant to say I bought was a PowerBook 5300 CS...

And all the rest.

What system are you running it on now? How big is the HD of the SE/30?

The 5300 sold with a weird version of 7.5.2 with an enabler in the
system. I think you can run it on 7.5.5 w/o the enabler. 7.6.1 is the
best system for it. They are slow as shit. Speed doubler is a must,
really improves the performance. My 5300ce died recently ;-) but
fortunately I had a Pismo as backup.

Thank you for the reply, Paul.

The SE/30 is running 6.0.8, with an 850 MB drive, and the 5300CS that
doesn't work in SCSI Disk Mode is running 9.1. The other 5300CS, the one
that works in SCSI Disk Mode, is running 7.6. Both 5300's have 750 MB hard
drives.

If 7.5.5 will work I will be ecstatic. I'll see if I can pick up a copy of
7.6.1. Speed isn't really much of a concern for me, all my work is word
processing and I can't type that fast. :) And I am still used to my PB100
which ran 6.0.8L.

I am looking at getting a used 4X CD-ROM to help with the loading of OS's,
but I saw something earlier that might indicate a difficulty in getting one
that will work for both my SE/30 and the 5300. Do you know anything about
this possibility?

Thanks again for your help. It has been a long time since I was in the
thick of things.

My personal preference for your situation would be an old tray loading
300 (2x) Apple external CD. This model does require a case or whatever
they call the thing to hold the CD. I had one for legacy Macs and it
worked very well. Should pop up on ebay. They do require the 50 pin
scsi cable. The main advantage is compatibility. No need for any FWB
software. I am not sure that CD's work with OS 6. They became
available right about the time of OS 7.

Yeah, I've come to the same conclusion through this and other research. I
am trying to get a 4X CD drive on eBay, and I have already decided to take
the SE/30 up to at least 7.5.5 (when I can find those disks again.) If it
will go that far, I may take it to 7.6.1, like the PB5300 CS. Do you know
if the SE/30 will run 7.6.1?

Thanks again,

Dave

The case for the old apple CD's is called a caddy. I forgot the word.

"Don't" computers for the 7.6.1 update readme:

Do not install this update if you have a Macintosh Performa 4400 or a
Power Macintosh 4400, 5500, 6500, 7300, 8600, or 9600 series computer.
You can obtain Mac OS 7.6 and Mac OS Update 7.6.1 through the Mac OS
Up-To-Date program. If you have a PowerBook 3400, you need to download
the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update for the PowerBook 3400.

The 7.6 readme does not have a list of "ineligable" models. Obviously
the plus and se are eliminated by their need for over 4 MB ram. I sold
my se/30 when I bought a PB180c. I had 8 MB of ram at the time,
although I think it can go to 128 MB if you can find 8 functional 16 MB,
30 pin SIMMS. There are two banks of four ram slots and each bank of
four must have identical SIMMS. The highest system I ran on the SE/30
was 7.5.3 which ran just fine. I did run 7.6.1 on my PB180c toward the
end of its life. I had 14 MB and ramdoubler.

OS 7.6.1 is the highest system that a 68030 machine can run. SE/30 are
not 32 bit clean, so if you haven't done so, be sure to load the Mode32
utility. Also, upon installing a new OS, the first thing you should do
is open the memory control panel and turn 32 bit addressing on.

Good luck

Thank you, Paul.

I'll look at the possibilities, try what I can, and do whatever is necessary
to keep running. I appreciate your help.
