GraphicConverter - constrain selection?

I have a horizontal format photo that's 1600 by 1200. I want to crop a
part of the image into a vertical 3:4 ratio. Is there some way of making
GraphicConverter constrain its selection tool to either a certain ratio
(like 3:4) or number of pixels (like 480x640)? All I've been able to do
so far is constrain it to a _square_ by holding down the shift key as I
drag. Not very useful!

I've done a Google Groups search for this, and I've searched the Graphic
Converter manual for "constrain," "ratio," and "proportions" and not
been able to find an answer...

TIA

I just realized I can do this iPhoto - (from the organize window) select
a picture, click edit, select a ratio in the popup below, click and drag
to select, and click the crop button.

All the same, I'd prefer to do this in GC if possible.

Hi

If you option-double-click the selection button in the "Toolbox" a dialogue
box comes up and there you can set aspect ratio at the bottom.

While this works, the option key is unnecessary. All you have to do is
double-click on the tool's icon in the Toolbox. Several tools have
adjustable paramaters and they are all accessed in the same way:
double-click on the tool's icon.

As mentioned in another reply: double-click on the select tool icon.

Unfortunately, the manual does not show a screen shot of the select
tool's dialogue box nor does it mention anywhere that the tool can be
aspect-ration constrained.

However, there is a hint. In manual section "4.2 Select Tool" it says:

"Use this tool to select or move a rectangular selection.Double click
on the symbol to get a dialog."

Graphic Converter, like PhotoShop, Canvas and other graphics
applications uses double-click on a tool icon to bring up a dialog box
for tools that have adjustable parameters. Its always a good idea to try
that on tools that seem logical for what you want to do just to see if
there are useful adjustments or constraints available.

Oh yes, of course, just double click as you say :)

I don't know why I wrote "option".

There is a third party manual in English on the way BTW. This is a
translation of a German one, which I've never seen. I suspect this third
party manual might be a lot better than the bundled one though. The manual
can be got by going to the Lemke web site, if you like you can order it now.
I am told the new manual will be available 15 April.

Reading the manual doesn't seem to have presented itself to your
consciousness as an option either, it seems... :-) m.

Ah, Matt. Perhaps you didn't read my original post. While I didn't
RT_whole_FM, my original post mentioned that I _had_ searched the manual
for "constrain," "proportions," and "ratio" and didn't find anything
relevant to my question. Apparently, there's _one_ sentence in the whole
140 page manual about setting options for the selection tool - "Double
click on the symbol to get a dialog." Gee, how could I have missed it?

(Well, okay, I'll admit there's a similar sentence in the introduction
to Ch. 4, Editing Tools, too - double click on a tool to set options.)
But come on, you're a writer. Don't you agree that the GC manual leaves
something to be desired? "Double click on the symbol to get a dialog"???

How about "Double click on the symbol [on the toolbar] to get a dialog
[which lets you set transparency options, control the selection's
position, or constrain the selection to a fixed size or aspect ratio]."?

Lemke's web site says there's a new manual (being translated from German
- uh-oh! - let's hope they didn't just run it through Babelfish!) that's
supposed to be coming out in April, for $10. I'm not sure how I feel
about buying a piece of shareware for $35 and then being told I can buy
a _useful_ manual for it for another $10. Hmmmmm...

My guess is that Thorsten didn't want to undertake the xlation himself,
and he found someone who would do a good job for a fee. He probably took
up a survey and found that he could at least break even if he charged a
small fee.

I predict that, once he's recouped his costs, Thorsten will probably
distribute it to paid registrants thereafter.

But that's just a guess :)

You can. It took me ages to figure this out:

Double-click on the selection tool. Look at bottom of ensuing dialog
box. Hit self in head several times . . . :-)
