Think they'll ever port it over? Bet. Seriously, I know bungie said, "No way,
eff that," but come on ... money rules this world. They'd make a bloody ton.
Aside from the textures, sounds, and aliens.. how can DOOM
emulate Marathon? Pretty tough WAD to creat there... with building-like
levels, spiral stairs, and what not... seems a bit of a problem? Besides
that, Marathon's 16bit graphics, 128X128 full res textures, larger ful res
aliens, and what not.. seems even a bit more difficult. Suffice to say, it
would suck.
Marathon will never be ported.. Bungie said that and they are
sticking with it. Even if it was ported, it would never be that popular
going up against games created specificaly for PC's. Those games run
faster and smoother. Besides.. If you haven't seen Descent or
DarkForces yet.. Marathon is tottaly inferior looking after you have
played them for an hour. Kinda the same effect Marathon had for DOOM.
After playing Descent for a while going back to low res, 256color
graphics is not soo bad! ;)

If it makes you feel any better, Marathon cannot physically exist in
the DOOM world. You can create all the Pfor .gifs and textures you
like, but in DOOM there are still a couple of limits:
1.The ability to look all around (especially up and down)
2.The ability to pass UNDER a sector that you could walk
ACROSS (i.e. multiple, overlapping levels). The DOOM engine is funky,
but exists only in two dimensions. Those things that appear to fly,
do not actually fly. To kill them, you have only to aim in their
direction at ground level. Pay very close attention to the
architecture, the next time that you play DOOM. You will see that
there are no underpasses or overpasses. This makes levels much easier
to write but gets in the way of the sheer possibility afforded in
Marathon. Untill DOOM ]I[ comes out (probably inevitable),
Marathoners can explore their 3D worlds in peace.
