Today, the hauntingly beautiful world of Myst is
eerily deserted. To untangle the tragic web of deceit that has
been spun across the island of Myst, you must enter a virtual
world and begin the most challenging quest of your life.
Br?derbund Unveils Myst, a Surrealistic Multimedia Adventure
NOVATO, CA (September 24, 1993) Q Br?derbund Software,
Inc. (NASDAQ: BROD) today released Myst*, a surrealistic adventure
game designed to deliver the power and promise of multimedia
computing (CD-ROM) with more to explore than any compact disc game
to date.
Myst is a story of betrayal and adventure brought to life
with photo-realistic 3-D graphics, a haunting soundtrack, and
mind-bending puzzles that will challenge players ages 14 and up.
The Macintosh version is available in stores for approximately
$59.95. An MPC version is currently in development.
Myst is an artistic tour de force from brothers Rand and
Robyn Miller, creators of the critically acclaimed children's
programs Spelunx and the Caves of Mr. Seudo*, Cosmic Osmo* and the
Manhole* and co-founders of Cyan, Inc.
"Myst is more than a game Q it's an experience," explains
Rand Miller. "Robyn and I set out to create a virtual mystery
that combined gorgeous graphics and great sound, the trademarks of
CD-ROM, with truly challenging puzzles and an engaging storyline
to tie it all together."
Myst features a first-person point of view without
distracting on-screen controls or windows and the non-linear
gameplay allows players to explore many places at once. It is an
unusual adventure game because players carry no inventory,
encounter no time limits and enjoy a limitless lifespan. A richly
symphonic original soundtrack and realistic sound effects enhance
the impact of the Myst experience.
The story begins when you stumble across a battered old
book. You pick it up, leaf through its dusty pages, begin to read
... and suddenly find yourself transported to an alternate reality
unlike anything you have ever experienced before.
You have entered Myst. Created by Atrus, a man with the
amazing gift of writing books that transport readers to fantastic
worlds, Myst island is where you begin your journey. From here,
you can access one of several Ages (each with its own theme) by
solving challenging puzzles. For example, in one Age the key is
to channel water through pipes to power various devices. Switch
one spigot and you power an elevator which takes you to another
level of the mysterious tree village.
Solve the puzzles and you begin to unravel the mystery of
Myst. Atrus fears one of his two sons has harmed his creations.
It's up to you to discover the truth.
Myst requires an 8-bit 256-color Macintosh with CD-ROM
drive, 3MB hard disk space and 2.5MB free RAM available.

Yeah, well I know why - no one can latch onto a copy!
And I think the price is going up, as all us eager-beavers keep asking
for it.

Anyone? Wondering if it's worth checking out...
Also, anyone have 7th Guest yet? Has it shipped? If so, how is the speed and
playability?
Thanks for any info ...

er, edu
Myst is a bit like 7th Guest. In 7th Guest, puzzles are confined
in an area, but in Myst, the puzzles span multiple sections of
the game. Because you're interacting with the whole island of
Myst, it's natural. I just played 7th Guest on a friend's PC,
and haven't finished the game, so I'm just familiar with the
various puzzles that's available in that game. Myst is different
because there are puzzles, but their presence isn't explicit.
In addition, the game doesn't have the nice rendered transitions
of 7th Guest, but it's rewarding in other ways. I like the story
line better.
Fry's Electronics in Palo Alto, CA has (or had, I don't know--I
got my copy yesterday) a bunch of them. Something like 10 copies
or so.

I have been playing MYST and loved it. I am now waiting for my copy of 7th
Guest to arrive. Will 7th Guest dissappointt after MYST, or are they two
different games and both just as good? I hope 7th Guest will take
advantage of the Macs higher resolution when they port it over.

I would like both. 7th Guest is, in my opinion, a glorified
Fool's Errand or 3 in Three. Myst's plot is a bit more involved,
I think.

7th Guest for the PC uses all available resolution on my friend's
17" monitor. It's set to something like 1024X768 for his setup.
If 7th Guest for the Mac doesn't use all the machine's resources,
I'll be disappointed. Now that I think about it, I believe 7th
Guest has a black border around its playfield so I'm not sure
anymore. Nevermind...
Incidentally, I like 7th Guest's interface a lot better than
Myst. The skeleton hand that beckons you is really done well.
And the fact that when you move from one scene to the next, you
actually see in first perspective you _moving_ from a scene to
another adds to the game's ambiance.
It's a cross between a really good interactive book and dreaming. It sets a
mood like no other game! (Journeyman came close.. so did Iron Helix).
It is a 100% puzzle game... good tough ones. It is non-linear and very
inlvolved..
I definitely reccommend Myst.
I don;t think 7th guest is out yet.

What do you mean "Still look leik they were generated by a computer"?
They all generated on "Computer"!!!!!
They are not real photo!!!!!
They are all 3d rendering!

On my 660AV, I got a system crash (the whoooole thing locked up, had to hit
the power button) after running the intro; as soon as I had "dropped" to the
ground, the MacBomb dialog box came up. If I click the mouse while the intro
is still running, I don't have that problem.
As for what I think about MYST? To paraphrase: "I _LIKE_ IT!" :-)

This has *got* to be a great game: a system crash, and the guy just
figures out some way to get past it and play, and he doesn't even
mention the crash until explicitly asked!
Actually, as much as I like the game, it was really a case of "I paid $$$
for this #*(&! thing and it CRASHES?!?!?!?" and then trying a couple of
tricks before bundling it back up and heading for the store... :-(

I have a 660av also, and you can avoid these system crashes by running
a startup manager and making a new start up for MYST. Put in it
only the Extensions MYST will need ( like all the CD access ones, Quicktime,
Sound Manager and Memory).
People who are getting crashes probably have and extension conflict.
This method works great for me. I'm SO HOOKED.
Has anyone figured out the puzzle in the fireplace. I'm baffled. Not
even a little hint could be found.
