Isn't there an option in SoftWindows to emmulate a PC speaker? I thought I
remembered one. I'll go check.

Patrick,

SoftWindows does emulate a PC speaker, but the sound out of it is like
fingernails on a chalkboard <g> Also I have some games that don't seem
to work with the speaker emulator. Even if they did, I would rather have
no sound at all. My Mac just looks at me and says "why are you doing this
to me!" when the crud comes pouring through my powered speakers :-)

I have installed POP 2 on my 7100. It runs fine (not as good as my
step-dad's 486/66 with soundblaster, but it is still very playable), and
with sound. Mind you with PC speaker sound.

Just turn on the PC speaker.

Awright....is there a definitive list as to what games people have found
acceptable under SoftWindows? Does anyone know if Wayne Gretzky Hockey 3
works under SW? The configs on the box say minimum requirement of 286. I
wonder....

Basically, this is the way it *should* work: if the game says it will
work on a 286, it *should* work on solfwindows. If it says it requires a
386+, it wont work.

A warning: I tried Ultima 1 and 3 on a Powermac with softwindows. The SW
VGA emulator is S-L-O-W. Movement in U1 and U3 was like watching a full
screen quicktime. And the games aren't even VGA, so they should be
bloody fast.

If anyone has better info(like it actually is fast with a REAL VGA game),
tell me.

I have been trying to run some simple DOS games (e.g. Wolf3D) on my
PowerMac 8100/80 with Softwindows. For laughs, I even tried the DOS
version of Chuck Yeager's Air Combat. Don't. The SoftWindows VGA
emulation is definitly orders of magnitude slower than real VGA hardware.

Most MS-Windows stuff runs perhaps only 5 times slower, though, so
Insignia seems to have focused on gettings graphics speeds in windows apps
to be acceptable, but have not worried about DOS mode graphics.

When do the 500 MHz PowerPCs come out?

I had a LLLoooooooNNNGGG talk with insignia after buying
SoftWindows...basically SW is a 286 emulator...so 286 games SHOULD run on
it....A 486 emulator is suppossed to come out by the end of the year.
As far as acceptability...all games ran super slow on SW on my PowerMac
6100/60av...dumping just about ALL extensions will speed things up
somewhat. If you've seen Wolfenstein or Alone In The Dark (for instance)
on a 286 you'd notice it running slow anyway.
I was never able to get sound tho..so if anyone has any solutions I
would be glad to hear about them.

Eye of the beholder 2 runs just fine on a 6100. The only problem I had was
that I couldnt figure out how to emulate the second mouse button, which meant
that I couldn't fight. PC mouse movement was also jerky. This was running
under the Softwindows demo program.

Wing Commander I (one of the best games ever, IMHO) runs fine. Of course,
it runs "acceptably" on a 286.

I believe you use the "=" key on the number pad for the second mouse
button. A cludge, but I guess it works.

I ran a DOS speed check utility on my 8100 - the overall speed returned was
very good except for the video BIOS tests that estimated a relative speed
1/10th of an XT. Thus all games that use the video BIOS routines will run
slowly. Microprose Grand Prix runs very well at about the same speed as my
neighbours 386, I presume this is due to direct writing of data to video
RAM.

As mentioned earlier Wolf3D runs very slowly... so I am waiting to buy the
Mac version.

Hmmm...

I'v played U1-U6 running SoftWindows ..on a 66Mh Q700 with a PPC
card..runs GREAT. U6 VGA runs far faster (???) than the others.. :)
almost to fast ..

I have played Prince of Persia 2 with SoftWindows, running on a 7100\66.

The game was playable and the basic sounds worked. (PC Speaker) It played
a little faster than my friends 386.
