I saw an ad for Macs in Computer Game Review. The ad stated how power macs
were good for games. It showed a picture of DOOM II with an "Accellerated
for PowerPC" logo on it. I hope it comes out soon.

NO, sorry. It's doubtful that Doom will ever be ported to MacOS.

Reasons?:

1. Market share size
2. Difficulty in rewrite for Mac ROM libraries
3. Priorities (i.e. Dos, windows, windowsNT, Warp, windows 951/2, UNIX)
4. Marathon, simply put, will always beat Doom on a Mac. Better engine, better graphics, integrated digitial stereo sound,
better AI for monsters. They haven't been doing this for their dos let alone for MacOS.

Bottom line, more and more you will see software companies (smaller ones) that will only produce software for a single or
small group of related platforms. Easier, more managable, and more cost effecient.

Embrace Marathon and be waiting for Marathon II (I hope :+)

Ummmm, Sorry Aaron but you're wrong. Doom II is being ported, Doom will not be.

Real question: Can they improve Doom II to make it a successful competitor to Marathon, doubtful but we'll see.

I don't think ID Software needs to produce a Marathon-quality game to make
an (admittedly relative) enormous killing in the Mac game market. How
many "Is MacDoom out yet?" posts do we see on here each week? Even if
Doom II for Mac is the same 320x200, 8-bit color, plotless gore-fest,
shoot-baddies-even-when-your-gun-isn't-pointing-at-them game that it is on
the PeeCee, people will buy it. Heck, I'm a rabid Marathon fanatic, and
even though I think Doom II pales in comparison, I will buy it.

If ID makes Doom a 16-bit 640x400 game like Marathon (and that would take
less work than you think), that's just icing on the cake.

Of course, if by "successful competitor" you mean qualitatively successful
(as opposed to the bean-count), I don't think ID can or will do it. The
things that make Marathon a better game are things that can't very well be
added in a port without making MacDoom a complete divergence from PC Doom:
the ability to look up and down, the fascinating plot, the physics model,
and the enemy cleverness (I am quite underwhelmed by how stupid the Doom
beasts on my roommate's 486 are), just to name the most prominent. But I
applaud ID's move to port Doom. It's a great game, and it's always good
to have another great game on the Mac.

Now, what makes my mouth water is the project some folks are working on to
convert Doom levels to Marathon. Just think, in a year or less, we'll
have tons of new levels, new enemies, and the ability to edit. Hopefully,
Bungie will follow up Marathon with a sequel. Maybe title it "Salamis" or
"Plataea" to continue the ancient Greek battle metapfhor.

The plot begs to be continued. Come on, Bungie. Do it.

Any word on the Doom .wad converters? I seem to recall someone
posting that they would have a wad converter ready by mid-march.
Anybody hear anything?

Whatever.

They're practically the same game.

When someone says Doom, I'd assume they meant either of the two.

Can Doom II run the Doom WADs? I'd assume so, but I'm not sure.

I think that's a little nitpicky. I think what most people are asking
is will "some form of DOOM" be ported to the Mac. The answer to that
question is yes.

> Real question: Can they improve Doom II to make it a successful competitor to Marathon, doubtful but we'll see.

I agree this is a more important question. If the port had come some
time ago, it's success would be assured. However, after playing
Marathon, Doom pales in comparison. Yes, Doom is still a fun game, I
play it on PCs when I get the chance, but when given a choice, Marathon
wins hands down. Doom single player levels get boring real quick.
Stupid demons and easy ammo. The graphics will be exactly like the PC
version (I'm NOT impressed.)

I think any success of Doom II on the mac will depend on an ability to
directly access the exising pool of PC pwads (or indirectly via a
converter) and the ability to play against PC gamers over some common
medium (appletalk, modem, tcp/ip). Deathmatches with other MacDoomers
is taken for granted, but with the quality of the Marathon netgame
experience I don't think MacDoom would motivate me much to seek out
other MacDoomers. I'm always on the lookout for other Marathoners. The
ability to play against PC players on MacDoom would gain my interest
somewhat.
