I just bought a copy of StarFlight by Electronic Arts and am quite pleased
with the game. However, when running in 16 or 256 color mode, the color
pallate gets messed up, which results in strange-looking text (sometimes the
text and background colors are the same!). Does anybody know of a patch
or anything that would fix this? I'm running version 1.0.

I just e-mailed somebody about this game. Don't buy it if you want to.
If you already have, TAKE IT BACK!!! My friend went out and bought it
and had the same problem. Seems that the game is not compatible with
32-bit quickdraw. When he asked ECA if they would fix it, they basically
laughed at him and gave him the raspberry. This is the kind of crap to
expect from companies doing shoddy ports to the Macintosh.

On a side note (now that I'm on the ol' soapbox): I used to love ECA games
when I had an Apple IIe. Games like PCS and One on One are immortal. The
only decent game they publish for the Macintosh is PGA Golf. Games like
Starflight and more importantly Earl Weaver Baseball are crap. EWB is
actually better on the IBM!(auuugggh)!! These are 2 examples of ports
without care put into them. Anybody considering buying games like these
would be better off considering REAL Mac games like Spaceward Ho!, SimCity,
and OIDS.

I agree that ALL should avoid Electronic Arts & StarFlight.
I purchased this game and received a defective disk for the
color version. After considerable time, I finally received
a readable disk. I put the software onto my Mac IIcx and
have never been able to get it to run. The B/W version
runs and looks crummy.

I would have sent this game back BUT it took so long
to get the fixed diska and I have traveled too much that
I figure they'll complain about the time lag. I figure
that I have spent my money to learn its a crummy company.

I did some more experimenting with settings and got it to work under
16-color mode and System 7. The text is occasionally difficult to read
(like orange-on-yellow) but otherwise legible.

I have to disagree with your opinion that EA is a lousy company; some group
called "Micro Magic" was in charge of porting a Commodore 64 game to other
machines. The game itself is great - maybe Micro Magic is at fault here.
The stuff they used to put out for the Apple II was wonderful.

Well, I don't know much about EA, but every game that I have ever seen
that MicroMagic had anything to do with was garbage. Didn't they do
Car Wars for the Mac? There was a lousy port! And yes I did own
StarFlight for a while. It was playable, but ugly and slow. I sold it
first chance I got.
