Getting the flame thrower is actually quite easy and requires no
spinning around in mid air. All you have to do is get yourself in one
of the two darkish rooms on level 2 that has two red and white stipey
steps leading from the floor to the wide ledge/walkway (after the
rooms with the revolting green walls). If you stand at the top of the
steps you should see the opening to the raised corridor up and to your
right. This is where the flame thrower is.
Stand as close to the edge of the top step as you can without going on
to it, facing the raised corridor. Swivel round 180 degrees until
your back is to the raised corridor. Use the map view to line
yourself up more accurately. Point your grenade launcher down and
shoot. You must immediately use the run backwards key whilst in mid
air to reach the ledge. I use the caps lock for run instead of the
control key which means less frantic finger work.
You should now be in the raised corridor but facing backwards. Turn
round quickly, level your gun and shoot at the shadows. Try and push
forward or you will get knocked back out of the corridor and then you
will have to go back and get some more health. Shooting yourself with
a grenade once hurts, twice turns you a bit crispy :-) You will
need full health and a full MA.75 clip before you attempt this. It
really is a doddle once you know how. I can now get into the raised
corridor nearly every time, no acrobatics needed. Mail me if you are
still stuck.
Note. You can also take out the shadows with grenades (wastefully)
before you get into the raised corridor but you can try that out
yourselves.

Now *that* seems unfair -- I think it would be much more entertaining, not
to mention "realistic" to finally get up there and find the crumpled
remains of the flame thrower you worked so hard to reach :) Or even
better, one which looked okay but failed to work. Especially in a pinch.

I can just see it sort of sputtering out with a few pathetic flames as
you pull the trigger hoping to roast a column of oncoming purples and
blues.
