He has run into some kind of memory related error playing Myst. We
narrowed it down to the following that can be repeated:
While playing Myst and _only_: 1) reading the note by the observatory,
and 2) solving the clock tower problem (2:40; 2,2,1); the front
gear then opens opens: new music plays for about 8 seconds and
then the following error occurs:
out of memory
clicking the mouse once gets:
out of memory error #t35 occurred
clicking once again gets:
out of memory error type 11"
Other different sizes of perferred memory get simular but different
memory errors (2500K, 3500K, 4500K, 5000K).
Also, this may or may not be related. The "The Making of Myst" QT
movie plays very poorly. Both the picture and the _sound_
skip a lot.
Does anyone have experience with Myst on a Power Mac simular
to the above that they are willing to share that may relate
to this problem.
Thanks.

Dump the Sound Manager 3.0 extension copied from the Myst CD. You don't need
it because the PM already has Sound Manager 3.0. (On the other hand, that
won't fix your problem, but at least you'll have one less thing to worry about.)

Yep. It sure does on a Power Mac! I've been following this group for a while
and I've read the following explanations:
1) The Hypercard core that Myst is built on does not properly determine the
amount of memory it needs -- something about hypercard thinking that disk
blocks are smaller than they really are. (Apparently disk blocks are
allocated in bigger chunks on the PMs.)
2) There is a memory leak in Myst when run on a PM.
I cannot verify either of these and I may be misremembering them; however,
I can *certainly* attest to the symptoms that you report. (I
have a PM 7100.) Also, I found that if you save the game every hour or so and
then restart from the saved game you have a good chance of getting over the
"sticking" spots in the game where it runs out of memory.

Yep! A friend of mine has a Centris 650 with a double-speed drive. When he
runs the Myst QT movie it plays fine.
Another friend recently bought a mac si and also bought a single-speed
CD-rom drive. Guess what? The Myst QT movie plays pretty much exactly the
same as it does on my PM: badly! I was cheered by that. :-) Then what he
did was play around with the CD-rom caching control panel that came with the
drive to see if we could improve things a bit. (Sorry, don't remember the
name of the product.) We selected the caching scheme recommended for CDs
manufactured by the makers of Myst and tried the game again and it worked
just fine!
My (very rough) conclusion is that the reason the Myst QT movie is playing
badly on the PM is the same reason it plays badly on my friend's si: CD-rom
delays. I just got my own copy of Myst and I'm going to play around with
some things on my machine to see if I can figure out how to fix the QT
problems too.
Although I don't have any good suggestions on how to fix the problems, may my
comments above at least cheer you a little to know that you're not the only
ones seeing these problems.
Cheers!

Doing this _did_ seem to help. My friend played for 2-3 hrs
with no crash or strange things happening. I don't think
he should have to do Modern Memory Manager off, _and_ it
is good to have this work-around.
Thanks!
