This game worked fine with earlier versions of the OS on a 6100, but
now I have a G3, which can't use 7.6.1, and with OS 8.x or 9.x, it
won't load w/out crashing. The iMac won't even recognize that the CD is
inserted. I looked around for a patch, but could find nothing.

Yes, this is a known issue. It has to do with your CD drive. There is a
fix on their web site.
