This game involves collecting blocks of gold, running away from baddies, and
digging holes in the ground. I think there was an IBM conversion of it, but
it was not quite as good as the Apple one.
Is there a site where I can down load this game, or perhaps an address I can
order the game from.
Please reply by mail. If I get a good answer, I'll post it back to the net.
Thanks.

Dynamix will be releasing a new version of Lode Runner later this year.
The biggest difference I'm aware of between the old Apple and IBM versions
was the size of the playfield. The Apple (and C64) versions were 28x16.
The IBM version was slightly smaller, meaning you couldn't put your homemade
Apple/C64 levels into it. I just spoke to QA at Dynamix, and their version
has a 28x16 playfield.
Has anyone else heard a mysterious rumor that Broderbund is also re-releasing
Lode Runner? It seems strange that they would do that...

Yes there is a version called gold runner on FTP - I wouldn't bother with it
though. Superficially it duplicates LoadRunner but it has none of the
playability factor.Rapidly becomes more frustrating than anything.

I recently downloaded a game called "Space Station Pheta" that looks a lot
like Loderunner...except you can't dig, and so far I haven't seen any
baddies chasing you. I admit I haven't played it very much, but based on
what I've seen I probably won't in the near future, either. In a
nutshell: it sucks.
I can't believe this game is being packaged and sold for $7.99 at
electronics/software stores!

There's an Apple II emulator out for the Mac called STM (Stop the

as a few other classics. If you're interested (I think STM and its images
have been removed from FTP sites) I'll e-mail them to you.

Back in the mid-80s, when IBM had its own software catalog for the IBM PC,
they offered a game called "Roadrunner" which was a blatant rip-off of
Lode-runner - same basic idea, except with roadrunners and bird seed. It
was hilarious!

There is a version of Lode Runner for Macintosh, it's about 10
years old however (as old as the Mac! :]). Space Station Pheta? Don't
even mention that. It's sad.
[DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL...]
Yup, I was right. In the article "IMG: New Games at CES," there's a
nice screenshot from "Lode Runner: The Legend Returns."
The accompanying text says:
"Lode Runner, the classic from 1982, is back, and believe me, it is
better than ever. The new version, entitled 'Lode Runner: The Legend
Returns,' contains ten different underground worlds and over 150 new
levels. As you are pursued through each of the 150 mazes, you must
snag all the treasure, dodge the evil Monks, and starting with just
your laser-pistol, bore through floors and walls to find the extra
tools you need to make it to safety. The new version also has some
spectacular high-resolution graphics, including fluid animation,
intriguing play fields, and bold, colorful characters. To top it all
off, you'll be able to play with a friend over a network."

Not really, they're just capturing a whole new "age group" for their games.
Kind of like Microsoft introducing "Microsoft Arcade" with Ms Pacman,
Defender, Battlezone, and Centipede (I think those are the games), since
most people with Windoze Pee Cees weren't around for the original games.
It's kind of funny, as someone pointed out in rec.games.video.classic,
that Microsoft Arcade requires Windows 3.1, 4megs of RAM, and 6megs of
hard drive space. But the original Ms. Pacman on the Atari 2600
takes 4k and a couple of ROMs! And what the 2600 uses to generate
sound (FM waveforms) have been sampled in the Windows version.
Microsoft: the marriage of crap code and crack marketing.

= ---== How to get LoadRunner ==--- =
============================================================================
This is the way to get LoadRunner for your computer:
---== You need: ==---
1) Apple ][ emulator
2) The game itself
3) A program to convert .bin files to .dsk (PC users)
---== Where to get these from: ==---
1) wilbur.stanford.edu pub/apple2
This is were you can find apple2 emulators.
The system (apple.rom) and disk (disk.rom) ROMs can be found in apl2em.zip
You can fudge the serial ROM by copying the apple.rom to serial.rom
( Never tried this, hope it works.)
PC users: go for the apl2em.zip file. It's all you really need.
Mac users: might want the Apple ][ emulator STM, which you can get from:
cassandra.ucr.edu pub/apple2
2) minnie.cs.adfa.oz.au pub/apple2/Cassandra_mirror/incoming/images
A bunch of apple disk images.
This includes several apple games, the directory listing is bellow.
3) cassandra.ucr.edu pub/apple2/incoming/Compress/bin2dsk.zip
PC users will need this program to convers bin file to dsk files.
apl2em uses dsk files.
---== Step by step guide for PC users ==---
I'm using a PC, so here's how I got Load Runner working:
1] Get the neccessary files down.
2] Uncompress them.
3] Put all the *.exe, *.rom, *.dsk, and *.bin files into one directory.
you should have: apple.exe, apple.rom, disk.rom, disk6a.dsk,
loadrunr.bin, bin2dsk.exe.
(To be certain, you can simply put -all- the files in the same
directory. Most of them are *.asm files.)
4] Run bin2dsk like this: C:> bin2dsk loadrunr.bin disk6a.dsk
5] Run the emulator: C:> apple
6] Enjoy.
---== Using an Apple ][ ==---
If you want to have a go at using an apple, you will need to keep the file
disk6a.dsk somewhere. This file represents the startup disk, and copying a
file to disk6a.dsk is like putting a disk into the drive.
Here are the few commands I can remember:
catalog - list files on the disk
load file - load "file" from the disk
save file - save "file"
The rest of the commands are BASIC. eg Try these commands. `]' is the prompt.
] 10 print "hello world"
] 20 goto 10
] 30 end
] list
] run
^C this will stop the program.
---== Programs List ==---
This is a directory listing of the Cassandra_mirror directory.
Note: Copying and running these games is probably software piracy, but
there seems to be no other way of getting them. As for me, I'm only the
messanger.

YEA! Apple ][ Piracy Lives!!!
Since very few people payed for this stuff to begin with, why not stash
it all at a FTP site!
The question is, if you can get away with doing this for 12-year old
Apple II software (and apparently you can), why not do it for 10 year old
Mac software as well.
So, if someone can recommend a site, I'll be the first one to upload my
Mac version of Loderunner. Its version 1.0 (November 1984) and is clearly
marked "Pirate Version" in the Apple menu. It runs fine on my LC, although
displaying the high score window will crash it. The level editor is
missing.

It's less of a problem with the Apple II because it's no longer being
manufactured by Apple, and many of the old Apple // developers are out of
business, and thus care little about the use of their product nowdays. On
the other hand, with the Macintosh, many of the developers of earlier
software are thriving, and old Mac titles can still be bought in software
stores (I saw the classic Star Wars the other day).

Well that is nothing more than another justifcation. It's still against
the law.
1) The three big game companies for the Apple II: Sierra OnLine,
Electronic Arts, and possibly Broderbund are all still in business.
2) The concept of 'Lode Runner' must still have some commercial
value, or it they wouldn't have remade it.
3) The Mac 128K and the IBM XT are as commercially dead as the Apple II.
What's the moral difference?
But, given that nonsense, let it be known that I'm not without sin and
I'm not casting any stones. I pirated *alot* of games in my day and am
not entirely apologetic about it.
I'm just shocked that someone would be maintaing a public FTP site on the
internet full of copyrighted software.
I seem to remember that even in the old days, even pirate BBS's had a little
more tact.
