Many years ago, when I had a Mac 512, there was a lovely little
game/mind puzzle called CHIPWITS. You were given an icon based
programming language and you had to program a small robot to explore a
virtual landscape. Sort of a "SIM ROBOT" if you like. It was fun,
educational (programming skills) and nonviolent- and it seems to have
disappeared from sight. Does anyone know of this game, or a similar
one, still existing? Does a similar game exist in the PC world?

More to the point, does anybody know where to find BrainWorks, the
publishers of ChipWitz? I would love the opportunity to buy the rights to
this game and make a version that will run on a machine newer than a
MacPlus.

Seems like someone could make a bundle to resurrect games/
educational tools like Chipwits and Bane [ 8-) ] .....

Seriously, I think an entrapreneur (sp) could make a bundle simply
buying up the rights to old MAC games, and recompiling them
to run on the newer macs... after all, the mac market is MUCH larger
now than when chipwits first came out, and as a programmer, I think
Chipwits was an excellent tool to teach kids programming basics...

Let me know when you do, huh? And, for anyone else listening in, add my
name to the list of chipwits fans.

This one does come us every so often, I asked the question myself back
in March 1993 and this was the best response I got, although I never had
the inclination to follow it up from down here.... :-)

I got ChipWits somewhere around 1985 or 1986. It quit working,
however, when I upgraded from a 128K Mac to 512K. In 1989 I asked the
internet about whether Brainworks (the company that made ChipWits)
still existed. In October of 1989 I got the following mail from Blake
Sobiloff:

From: sobi...@thor.acc.stolaf.edu (Blake Sobiloff)
Subject: ChipWits Upgrade
Organization: St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN

OK, for all you folks who want to make ChipWits work on a
Plus, there is an upgrade available. The problem with the
program is that it is written in MacForth, and MacForth
broke horribly when Apple came out with the Plus. The
author of ChipWits, Doug Sharp, was working on an upgrade
when his publisher went belly-up. He went ahead and
finished the upgrade, and is offering it free to anyone who
sends him their master disk. Please note that this upgrade
works for the Plus *only*--the SE and up still kill the
program. Doug's address is:

214 South Lincoln Street
Northfield, MN 55057

If you have any further questions (of me or of Doug), just
let me (us?) know...
Blake

I wrote to Doug Sharp in November of 1989, enclosing a SASE and a
blank diskette as well as the master disk, and after a couple of
months got back the revised version. Note that it requires a MacPlus
and an ancient operating system (v3.2, if I remember correctly) -- if
you are willing to boot from a floppy on a Mac Plus, it DOES work.

In April 1990 I got e-mail that said

Brainworks became Brainpower. They're still around...

Brainpower
30497 Canwood #201
Agoura Hills, CA 91301

(818) 707 1712

Note that all these addresses and phone numbers are ANCIENT, and
probably no longer valid.

Hope this information does someone some good. If it does, please
return the favor and send me any more up-to-date information you
have.

-- da...@vfl.paramax.com -- If my header says otherwise, it lies.

----- END MAIL -----

I hope that someone can pick up the ball and run with this one,
because there are quite a few of us who'd love to see this gem
resurrected into the Mac world of the nineties.

Absolutely. I ask anyone who gets more information to please POST
the results so everyone will know. Thanks.
