Playing wolf 3d on the external monitor of my powerbook 180 in smallest
screen size :( I notived a strange 'twitching' in the wall panels in
front of me occasionally, kind like those distortions you get when the
asphalt is 115 degrees. Ya know, heat waves? Oh, and I have been shot
through a door twice (no, there wasn't an SS behind me!) Any other
strange occurences?

Overall, I think Wolf 3D is a simplistic, testosterone-overdosed version
of paintball for grown men. Please don't bather to flame me--its an
opinion, not a personal attack on your FAAA-VORITE game. The plot is
pathetic, the action is repititious--I mean, on death incarnate level you
STILL get the drop on the bad guys every time you open a door! In the
old, 2-d Wolfenstien for the Apple ][, SS would smell you out and chase
you from room to room. You could do really cool things, like throw
grenades, diguise yourself, and even get drunk! Strategy, not trigger
speed, was paramount--remember how you could get an SS uniform and a
bulletproof vest? Then stealth became paramount. I guess i just wish the
bad guys did something more than sit in a room, guns holstered, waiting
to get whacked. What I would love to see is an RPG with the graphics
engine of Wolf and the depth and storyline of M&M III--the whole
shoot-to-kill thing is so 80's television!

I wouldn't deign to flame you, but isn't this something you should be
telling to someone who cares?

Every now and then.....I just really need a game whose directions are:
"If it moves, shoot it; if it doesn't, load it into your gun."

I can't take credit for that, but I love the quote.....

And a circle is round...
And what's with all the typing and talking in Zork?! Not enough shooting
and aiming!

Look at it this way: No one complains that Space Invaders has a pathetic
plot and repetitive action... that's because it's supposed to. And Wolf
isn't claiming to be the best Adventure/Strategy game ever...

People have made similar complaints about Pathways - not fast enough, not
enough blood, not enough action - and people's response? That's not the
type of game it's supposed to be.

Not me! Wolf is PERFECT -- PID had too much strategy to make it
interesting to me. I don't WANT to think; if I do, I'll go muddle
over Return to Zork or somesuch. When I'm playing an action game,
that's what I want. Wolf captures it very well -- the bodies flying
in the air, the blood spurting out, the dogs plaintative howls as they
die. It's a total release game. Mind off, relaxation on.

Of course, differences in opinion exist, and that's why there's a market
for both Wolf and D&D-type games. Just don't try to lump bucket one
into bucket two, or vice-versa; you'll definitely wind up disappointed.

And now, back to the gore-fest :-).

curious, you answered my question on how an rpg graphics engine should
be written...

(as a side note, anyone else tried wolf3d on a powermac with a ram
drive... at normal moving speed it goes like runnings... and thats with
the speed governor... (without it, the game becomes unplayable...)

No, there's a lot more stragey in paintball - the bad guys aren't always in
the same place, they hunt you down, you can sneak by them, etc.

I think Wolf3D is great for what it is. I just hope (pray, plead, beg) that
Marathon has much more thought involved in playing.

The old castle wolfenstein games were fantastic! My favorite thing was holding
up a nazi with an unloaded gun, stealing the nazi's ammo, then shooting him!
Awesome!

When Wolf 3-D came out on the pc, I was disappointed, but now that I've gotten
into it, Wolf 3-D is great. I sure do miss the old Wolfenstein, but I'll live
with the new version.
