Well here it is. I decided to whip up the MacDOOM FAQ after no one else
seemed to want to take it on. As should be obvious to anyone following doom
or macdoom this FAQ is very much incomplete. I'm hoping to have the works of
others to fill it out. Some problems have crept up on me recently and I might
have to pass the work of this FAQ on to someone else. I'll try to solicit for
this task if I have to. I originally wrote the FAQ in html and you can see it
at the doomgate. the URL is http://doomgate.cs.buffalo.edu/~rkinion/faq.html.

Okay now, without further adoo here is ....

*1-2* About the MacDOOM FAQ
===========================

The MacDOOM FAQ [Frequently Asked Questions] is meant as a supplement
to the "Official" Doom FAQ by Hank Leukart <
ap...@cleveland.freenet.edu >. Although there is some general Doom
information included, this FAQ tries to concern itself with MacDOOM
specific information. Some of the content and much of the structure of this
FAQ is based on that found in the Official DOOM FAQ.

This is version 0.5 of the FAQ and a first writing--this is also my first
FAQ--so there is likely to be lots of mistakes and some information that
hasn't been included. This is also a pre-release, meaning that it was written
before MacDoom came out which in itself means there is possible inaccurate
information.

The revision classification works like this: If only a small amount of
information has been added, like spelling corrections, the version number is
increased by 0.1 and is called a "minor revision." If a substantial amount of
new information has been added or changed the version is increased by 0.5
and is called a "Standard revision." A "Major revision" is when huge amounts
of new information has been added or major parts of the FAQ have been
rewritten and the version number is increased by 1.0.

If your wondering why the chapter numbers are enclosed in either []'s, ()'s,
or **'s, the definitions are as follows:

[]
Chapters enclosed in brackets mean that the information contained in
the chapter has not been updated in this or the previous FAQ.
()
Chapters enclosed in parenthesis mean that the information contained
in the chapter has not been updated since the previous FAQ.
**
Chapters enclosed in asteriks mean the information contained in the
chapter is new or has been updated for the current FAQ you are
reading. Note - Since this is the first writing everythin is new and in
**'s

=Section 1= About MacDOOM
**************************

*2* What is MacDOOM?
*********************

MacDOOM is the port of the PC game Doom to the Macintosh platform. It
supports all the same features as in the original plus lots of new abilities
that are specific to the Mac enviornment or for playing network games across
platforms with PC Doom users. Optimized for the Macintosh, there is support
for higher resolution modes that are not available in the original. There
are no new monsters, sprites or levels.

In Doom you are a UAC Space Marine stationed at one of the Mars moon
bases where top secret teleportation experiments are being performed. One
day something goes wrong and soon the base is overrun with what appears to
be demons straight from hell. Your fellow marines put up a fight, but soon
they are all either dead or 'possesed.' Now all alone and Knee Deep in the
Dead you must fight your way to the other side of the moon and your only
hope for escape.

In Doom][, you have finally come home after fighting your way literally
through hell. Now all you want to do is retire from the military and live
quitely at home. But on your way, portals from hell open up letting through
thousands of Demons, and bringing Hell on Earth. Millions are killed. The
Hellspawn have given mankind an ultimatium, Get out NOW. Mankind has
built itself a refuge in space, but the only spaceport capable of
transporting the leftover remants of Earth's populace has just been taken
over by demons and a sheild erected. Your Mankind's only hope, you must fight
your way through and shutdown that shield.

*2-1* When will it be out?
===========================

After their experiences with the original Doom, iD will no longer give
'official' release dates for it's games. It brings on too much
aggrevation if something goes wrong. The closest to an official release
date is that 'it will be out when it's done.' Nothing sooner. However as
a project gets closer to finish a release date can be more accurately
speculated on. As of this writing, MacDoom can come out at almost
anytime. There are two dates speculated upon the most, April 28 and
May 5. These seem like reasonable dates, but a release could come
much sooner or later.

*2-2* What do I need to run MacDOOM?
====================================

Right now there are no definites released as to what will be required,
but it is safe to say that one will need to have a Macintosh with an 040
processor and 4mb of RAM for low resolution mode, or a macintosh
with a PowerPC processor and 8mb of RAM to run High resolution.

*2-3* What makes MacDOOM different from Marathon?
=================================================

Like Doom, Bungie's Marathon is a 3-d first person perspective
action game. Marathon however uses new technology like true 3-d
maps instead of Doom's 2-d/3-d maps, artificial intelligence for
enemies, and high-color resolutions. Marathon also has support for
twice as many people in network games (8). MacDoom's support for
Modem games is much better though and the ability to play against PC
users is a definite plus.

*2-4* Can I use all those neat PC add-ons?
==========================================

Yes you can. MacDoom should be able to use all the pwads created for
PC Doom.

*2-5* What are the different versions of MacDOOM?
==================================================

*2-5-1* What is the Shareware/Registered version?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ShareWare MacDoom is basically a free copy of MacDoom
given to you to use as much as you want. All you have to do is
retreive it at any of the popular FTP sites. There is a catch
though. Like many other Shareware software, Shareware
MacDoom is limited in certain ways. It only comes with one
Episode and you are only able to use a certain set of the
weapons. To get the other two episodes and be able to use all
the weapons, one must register their copy with ID software. (
See section 3-2)

*2-5-2* What is the Commercial Version?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The commercial version of Doom is called "Doom II: Hell on
Earth&qout; and will be available only through stores and
mail-order companies. You can also order it direct through GT
Interactive, the official distributors of MacDoom, at
1-800-332-4300. (see section 3-3)
Features:
o 30 levels plus 2 secret levels
o New enemies
o More music and sound effects
o Levels designed with Deathmatching in mind

*2-5-3* Will the Ultimate Doom be available for MacDOOM?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

At the moment we don't know. However there is a good
possibility that it will. If you don't know what the Ultimate
Doom is, it's the original Doom going commercial with a
whole episode of new levels titled 'Thy Flesh Consumed.' It
should be available at stores once it's released.

*3* Where can I get MacDOOM?
*****************************

Since MacDoom has not been released yet you can't get it anywhere. However
once it's released you sould be able to find it at mac ftp sites everywhere.

*3-1* Where can I get the Shareware version?
============================================

This information is not available yet. However once it's
released MacDoom should be available at all the usual shareware sites,
including Info-mac and it's mirrors, and CD-ROMs.

*3-1-1* What are the file names?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

*3-1-2* What FTP sites is it at?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

*3-2* How can I get the Registered version?
===========================================

Since MacDoom hasn't been released yet this information isn't
fully available. However with Shareware MacDoom should be
instructions with an address or a phone number for where you can
order the registered version. When It's ready you should be able to
directly call in your order to iD software's order number
(800)-ID-GAMES. This number is for ORDERING ONLY, not for
inquiries or technical support. If costs are the same as PC DOOM this
should cost $40.00. People living out of the United States should be
able to order MacDoom by an out-of-country shareware distributor.

*3-3* Where can I buy the Commercial release?
==============================================

Once it's available you should be able to by MacDoom II
through your local Software store or through mail order catalogs. GT
Interactive, iD's official distributors will also be taking orders for the
Commercial release, their phone number in the United States is
1-800-332-4300.

*4* What Network Options Are Available?
***************************************

MacDoom's multiplayer (networking) options are very similar to the
original's. Anywhere from two to four players can play each other in
coopertive or deathmatch games. Each game is played on the same levels as
single player games are. In Cooperative play everyone starts together and you
try to work with your teammates to tackle each level. Deathmatch is a free
for all where the object is to kill or be killed. Each player is given all
the keys to move about freely and is started in some random location in the
level. (To find out more on how network games are structered see section 8 in
the official Doom FAQ.) You can play with the following connections:

1. Serial,
2. Modem,
3. AppleTalk, and
4. IPX networks

*4-1* Can I play against PC-DOOM users?
=======================================

Yes you can. Network support with PC users running Doom is fully
implemented. The following types of connections can be made with
PCs:
1. Serial,
2. Modem, or
3. IPX networks (Novell or MacIPX)

*5* How can I cheat?
********************

Cheating in MacDoom should be very similar to cheating in Doom, though
there maybe hidden stuff sticken in. Nothing can be confirmed until the game
is finally released.
