just as i got the colony down to 1 colonist, i realized
i hadn't taken the wormhole! just as i was about to end
the game, the dialog appeared offering me the cannon!
further experiments are necessary but i encourage others
to try this.

the original poster who discovered the secret of getting the
cannon suggested that one needed to fly through the wormhole
before going to M-9. he thought it was implied in the hint.
apparently the truth is otherwise.
