There are a few commercially sold AD&D games (Pool of Radiance, Pool of
Darkness, Unlimited Adventures, for example) that are made by SSI
(Strategic Simulations Inc.) I only have Pool of Radiance, and it's
decent, and supposedly the others are better. New World Computing also has
the series Might and Magic I, II, and III (and I think IV for the CD Rom).
The first is very good, the second excellent, and the third is supposedly
one of the best.
In terms of Shareware, Relmz (very good), Nethack (?), and Macangband (?)
are available over the internet, at most major ftp sites. There are a few
others, but those three are generally the most popular.

Have fun!

True D&D is a social activity with other humans, and such things can be had with
roleplaying going on over modem out of services like AOL. For computer games, only
the "hack and slash" or the "adventure" genre exist. Games in the former category
include all the Might and Magic games (I think III's the best for the Mac right now),
the Wizardry games, the old Quarterstaff game, and a few others (including one I
haven't played called Realmz which is getting a lot of good press). The adventure
games are legion including Return to Zork, 7th Guest, Myst, Journeyman Project, etc.

My favorites of the roleplaying genre are Might and Magic III, Wizardry I (B&W), and
Might and Magic II in that order. My favorite in the adventure category are Myst,
Journeyman Project, Iron Helix, and 7th Guest, also in that order. Hope that helps you.

What games like Dungeons and Dragons are available for the Mac? Which are
commercial and which are freely (or shareware) available? Which are better
than the others?

Only a little. The port quality was still poor & the masses of baddies got
bigger and more boring. PoR had the best story line, too (& the most
outright bugs, though). SSI seems to be dropping development for the Mac.
