Subject: [*] After Dark Blank 1.1
Blank is an After Dark module which simply blanks your screen.
Sometimes you and your monitor need a break from cute critters
and swirling lines. Blank is also appropriate for machines which
do not have time to animate screen savers, such as file servers.
Version 1.1 lets you choose the color Blank uses to blank the
screen. Black is the default color. White works well on LCD screens.
This module is freeware.

Async Family 1.14
by Alessandro Levi Montalcini
uploaded by Alberto Ricci
Requires System 7.0 or later.
***THIS IS A WONDERFUL UTILITY!!!***
Async Family is a set of applications and one extension. Actually, this
last one is not a real extension, it's a background application. This
means it will not have the usual conflict problems INITs have.
Well, Async family makes your Mac beep and play sounds Asynchronously,
i.e. you don't have to wait for the sound to be finished playing before
you can get back to work!
You'll be able to install 5-minute sounds in your System and use them as
System beeps!
Drop Mr.Player and Mr.Beeper in your system folder, select a new system
beep (a LONG one) in Mr.Beeper's control panel and restart your Mac All
your system beeps will be asynchronous, and if you have a Mac with the
Apple Sound Chip (all Macs but the 68000-based have it) you'll hear more
than one beep at a time. You may also drop AIFF and System 7 sound files
on Mr.Drop to play them while you keep working (multi-megabyte files can
be played without any trouble).

Boyz N The Hood Sounds
by David Brooks
Date: 7/08/92
This package features over a dozen sounds that were recorded from
the movie "Boyz N The Hood". Most of these sounds are about 4 seconds
or less in length. This package is great if you are using SoundEdit, or
even better, SoundMaster. If you don't have a file compression software,
don't worry--this StuffIt file is a self-extracting file.
This software should remain on SUMEX for 90 days (hopefully!)
Please be aware that a few of the sounds didn't come out so well--
the videotape that I recorded from didn't have very clear sound quality.
Sounds include: Helicopter
Shooting
"You have to think young brother, about your future."
-- Larry Fishburne
"We all gotta go sometime, homes" -- Ice Cube
"You still got one brother left, man" -- Cuba Gooding,
Jr.

Here is a DA circa 1987 called Calculator+ that does what you
request. It is freeware, has the paper tape feature (which you can
print if you like), has M+ M- MC MR keys, and a percent key (for
what that's worth). It also has sin, cos, tan, atn, Int, FV, PV,
Ax, LP, SqRt, ln, eX, xY, +-, pie, +, -, /, *, C and of course =.
It supports the numeric keypad and pressing clear once is clear
entry and clear twice is clear all.
It seems to work fine under System 7 (but I did not test it with 32
bit addressing or VM on). The print function worked for me to a
LaserWriter. The only thing the Apple calculator does that this one
doesn't do, is remember its screen position from the last time it
was used.

Subject: [*] Dvorak keyboard and many others
This file contains a Dvorak keyboard and many others from all nations. The
keyboards don't add any new character. It's just that the display is
different.
The KCHR resource from the System file is modified. by adding more keyboards
to
it.
For the user, the procedure is EXACTLY like INSTALLING and REMOVING FONTS or
SOUNDS. You drag the icon of the keyboard you want to the System FOLDER (not
the System itself). The keyboard is installed automatically. To remove, you
double-click on the System FILE itself and drag the keyboard out of the System
FILE.
You select the keyboard with the usual Control Panel device named Keyboard.
You
can create an Alias of that item and copy it to the Apple Menu Items folder to
access it directly without going to the Control Panel every time.
If there is a problem in the installation, it's because you already have a
keyboard in your System which have the same ID number as the keyboard you want
to install. With Resedit, you simply change the ID number of one of the
keyboard, probably the one you want to install. Also you can't install
anything
in the System file if something else is opened.

as you eliminate duplicates or decide which of two similar XCMDs
to keep, as you acquire new ones, as you eliminate old ones
because they no longer work (say, under system 7) or are outmoded
because their functionality is built into HC 2.x, etc.
2) A lot of people have asked recently, what XCMDs (public) are
out there? This list might give you an idea. However, please
note, *NO* XCMDs are included with the stack, I do *NOT* know
where to get many of the listed stacks today (although most have
passed thru sumex at one time or another, and all have been
available on the nets at some point over the past two years),

PREFACE
Judging by questions and complaints, more and more people are
playing with MacTCP and communications software which uses it;
many of them are having problems with MacTCP.
I've spent many hours installing MacTCP on Macs ranging from the
Plus to a IIci. I also devoted a large part of my free time to
digging up various useful applications for use on the Internet.
Hopefully some of my experiences will be useful to you.
Please note that I'm not a networking expert. Some of the advice
below simply stems from my paranoia and is not necessarily based
on facts. There are many problems with MacTCP which I don't fully
understand, like reported snags with built-in Ethernet on the
Quadras. In addition, please remember that I'm not a technical
writer, and my style may not be to your liking - sorry about that.

2. CANCEL and smoothly return to the caller application;
3. RESTART (you can always turn a Shutdown in a Restart);
4. SHUT DOWN (turn power off or safe-shutdown alert as usual);

Hello,
Does anyone know how to get a screen snapshot of a pull-down menu?
I am using system 7 with the tuneup installed.
Usually I use shift-command-3 to get a snapshot of the screen.
This doesn't work when you have a pull-down menu shown on the screen.
My purpose is to show the menus in user documentation.

IMHO, C is far from the optimal choice for a first programming language.
Basic or Pascal would be better choices for Mac programmers. Even with
ANSI C and solid programming tactics, you can send yourself to hyperspace
in so many new and novel ways programming in C. Pascal basically assumes
you're an idiot and forces many of the "good" programming techniques that
some of us have learned the hard way.
However, assuming you're going ahead with C, by all means get the Think C
compiler. You might also consider getting a copy of C-Master (Jersey
Scientific), which contains a raft of features for finding where you are
in a project, commenting/uncommenting code, and setting placemarkers to
come back to a specific place in a file. I think its about $70. When
using Think C, be sure to set your language settings (in the options
dialog box of the edit menu) to enable "Check pointer types" and
"Require Prototypes". Those two items should help avoid a decent fraction
of errors which can cause your Mac to crash. Now if the thing would
just barf on stupid mistakes like "if (dumptr = NULL) ...", which
is perfectly legal syntax, but almost never what I had intended. BTW,
Borland C does issue a warning message for an if statement like that.
Opinions expressed are my own, and I have no connection with vendors
of the above products except as a (generally) satisfied customer.

White Knighte meets almost all of your requirements. It has VT100, VT102, VT52
and TTY modes, supports up to 57600 baud, supports extended keyboard, has a
scrolable window (you can define size of the buffer), can print current
window,
or window that you scroll back as well as selected text. You can create macros
with it and assign any key to launch any particular macro (and macro will send
any sequence of characters you wish). You are limited to 3 sets of macros with
10
macros in each set active at same time so if you need more you would have to
write anoder macro to load new sets (and sacrifice one out of 30 macros for
it).
Hope this helps,

Subject: Comm Program Suggestions
I own two Comm programs for the Mac - Versaterm and Pacerterm. Both do what
you ask, and I'd recommend either, but my favorite is Pacerterm. Its a bit
more (it cost me ~$150 if I remember). It has an incredible scripting
language which lets you, amongst other things, perform loops, if-then
statements, use dialogs and windows, and have multiple sessions.
Both Versaterm and Pacerterm use the Comm toolbox, but Pacerterm does a better
job. It comes with tools for VT100 - VT320, XModem, Kermit, and Zmodem.
Versaterm supports transfer tools as well as has some built in protocols, but
it doesn't come with more than the standard (found at Apple) tools like Xmodem
and Ascii transfers. Built in are Kermit, X and Y modem (no Z).
Pacerterm lets you define keys as well as have SOFTKEYS on the screen. What
these SOFTKEYS are, are buttons at the bottom or top of your screen (not the
session window) where you can just click on something and have it do anything
>From run a script, type something, or change settings.
The editor in Pacerterm which is used to program your scripts is really nice.
All the commands are available from a scrolling menu and after choosing one,
it tells you what parameters the command uses and lets you fill them in. Or,
you can just type in everything.
Both Pacerterm and Versaterm allow you to "record scripts" which require
little to no modification after recording. Versaterm's scripts are hard to
modify much above changing the spelling of a command, while Pacerterm's
language tells you exactly what is going on.
Both programs support color, but since Pacerterm relies entirely on the
Communication Tools and there is no color TTY tool (that I know of) your
sessions, for now at least, are limited to B&W. When a color tool becomes
available, either by the Pacerterm folks or another party, you just need to
drop it in the system and you should have color. When I talked to the folks
at Pacerterm, they said that they were trying to write a color comm tool. (I
wonder how they tested their support of color if no tool exists?)
Anyway, going with Versaterm or Pacerterm would be your best bet and of the
two, I'd suggest Pacerterm.

Subject: EPS->previewable/editable EPS [C]
> Does anyone know if I can place the PICT version into the EPS file and
> get a (more or less accurate) previewable EPS file?
A somewhat tedious way of doing this is:
1) Save your ouput in EPS and PICT format (let's call the files
graph.eps and graph.pict). Download to Mac in your usual manner.
2) Open the PICT file graph.pict in MacDraw Pro or any other drawing
program that saves to EPSF format. Save the file in EPSF format (call
it pict.epsf)
3) Open pict.epsf and graph.eps in ResEdit. Copy the PICT resource in
pict.epsf into graph.eps. Save as graph.epsf.
Voila! graph.epsf is now PREVIEWABLE but NOT EDITABLE (nor is it edible
>:-) ! )
Basically we are transferring the PICT from the data fork to the
resource fork. I don't know of any shareware/freeware Mac programs that do
this automatically, unfortunately.
If you are on a UNIX box (which I presume is where you are running
SAS), you can also use ps-pict2macb which is included in ps2eps-11.shar
in the unix subdirectory on info-mac.
To use ps-pict2macb:
1) FTP ps2eps-11.shar from info-mac to your unix host. Unshar it by
typing 'sh ps2eps-11.shar'
2) You only need the ps-pict2macb.c program. Compile it with cc.
3) The EPS and PICT files must have the same filename and extensions ps
and pict respectively (e.g. graph.ps and graph.pixt). Execute
ps-pict2macb by typing 'ps-pict2macb graph.ps'. This will create the
file graph.bin which is a macbinary format EPSF file with the embedded
PICT. This file will then have to be downloaded with a communications
program that understands macbinary.
If you are working on a UNIX machine, ps-pict2macb is probably the easiest
way to go. A newer version that handles colour and large files more
robustly is available from the author (geo...@mech.seas.upenn.edu).

Sorry to not reply direcltly Yuki, but this might be a help to other
HP/Mac users out there.
HP owners can get a list of available drivers for their printer BY FAX from
the automated service ("HP FIRST") at (208) 344-4809. You call this
number from your fax, and respond to the verbal prompts. You will use the
touch
tone keys to indicate what technical docs you want from HP.
Doc# Description
9999 List of all available docs from automated fax service
9950 Driver request form, fill out and fax back to receive drivers
4506 Third parties supporting the Painjet family with utilities and drivers
9960 List of HP files on compuserve
I recommend documents 9999 and 9950 for the first time user; there is a
wealth of practical info on this fax service in addtition to the usual
product spec sheets.
The PainWriter Drivers include a Mac serial driver; I would guess this can
be used with the PaintJet if it has a serial port. It's worth a try, as the
drivers are free.
They are serious about this service, folks. I faxed my order for the
PaintWriter XL drivers last Thursday, before the holiday, and received the
new drivers free the following Tuesday.
Good Luck, Yuki!

If any of you digesters out there would like to throw your $.02 my way,

1) Mostly word processing, with occasional display, but not
creation of black and white graphics. Very little number crunching.
2) Must act as a System 7 server for remote access via Shiva
NetModem.
3) The major reason for the upgrade is twofold. The SE/30 now
in use has far too small a screen for conveniently working on multiple
documents simultaneously. So...a big screen is a must. Boosting up the
speed somewhat would be great, too, especially for disk access.
4) We'd like to invest in a machine that won't be obsolete this

arguments for IIsi vs. IIci??

A complete set of TrueType fonts comes with your IIg.
It's just that it's not necessary to have a TrueType italic
(oblique) version of all fonts because the plain version of fonts
like Helvetica can be properly slanted mathematically. TrueType
fonts can be slanted to any angle unlike bitmaps which seem to be
restricted to one slant angle. Fonts like Times and Palatino look
much different in italics, so in those cases, a seperate italic

problem. When I disable the Super PC-KWIK Disk Accelerator, MAC-IN-DOS

Er, spurred on by the flood of (okay...both) satisfied users of the
Word5 Speller Update, and, more importance by the recurrance of the
problem, I took my system apart and shook it out today. And I think
I pointed the finger in the wrong direction.
What was happening was that, with Sys7 and Tuner 1.1.1 running, and
only WordFinder Plus loaded, and a rebuilt desktop and a Norton Checked-Up
and even Optimized (can ya believe) disk, the following symptom occurred.
If I invoked the speller as soon as I launched, all was well; if I looked
up a synonym with WordFinder Plus and THEN tried the Speller, all Functions
kept in the Commands Folder (Find File, Grammar, Spell, etc) were reported
as "moved since Word was launched." I THINK I've traced the problem to `
keeping the WordFinder Thesarus in the Word Commands folder.
So far, so good. So I guess MS is off the hook on that one, and I
thought I should retract ASAP. On the other hand, despite the problems it
apparently gave me, I have to put in a plug for Word Finder Plus. It's
a FAR more useful Tool than the joke module included with Word 5 (not even
a perverted genius would ever have thought of a non-transitive thesaurus!)
It (WordFinder Plus) is cheap for users of the old Word4 ver. of Word Finder
(Just 19.95 w/ a phone call to Microlytics), and very easy to use. It's
even self-inflecting (look-up jumpING, it suggests hoppING, but jump just
gives hop, etc.) and it works in ALL applications. A good bargain. Just
keep the Thesaurus file in the System Folder, not the Word Command Folder....
Sorry for the false alarm.

a 512k module. I got another 256k module from Tech Works and when it
arrived, opened my Quadra to install the VRAM.
First shock: the DRAM and VRAM slots in a Q700 are under the drive assembly.
To get at them, you need to remove the power supply and the drive assembly.
Thinking better of this, I sent the machine over to our tech people to do
it for me. In the end, their total contribution for $40 labor was to
lose one of the rubber feet. If you use a Q700 in IIcx/ci orientation, never
let it out of yr office without saving the feet.
At first the tech people said they couldn't do the upgrade with my chips,
since the one from the LC has "For use in LC only" on it. This message
was attached to the chip before the Q existed, and should be ignored.
When I eventually got the machine back, I was still only getting 16 shades
of grey. I called TechWorks and one of their people casually mentioned
that "we find it works better if you put the modules in the slots furthest
>From the DRAM". It doesn't work *at all* if you put them anywhere else, and
this information is nowhere in their manual. Our technician had done what I
would have done, and put them in the slots closest to the DRAM. To be
absolutely precise: if you sit facing the Q700 in IIci orientation, there
are ten RAM slots one behind the other under the drive assembly. The first
4 are for main memory and can be filled with 1 meg, 2 meg (?), 4 meg or
(very low profile) 16 meg SIMMs. The next 6 slots are for 256k video ram
modules. You can either fill all six (for a total of 2 megs VRAM, there
being 512k already on the logic board) or just 2 (for a total of 1 meg VRAM).
In the latter case, put your modules in the two slots furthest away from you.
The TechWorks manual isn't completely explicit about getting the drive
assembly out, and I felt quite nervous doing it. However, there's no
chance of reconnecting things wrongly - the only way they fit is the right
way. The cables from the drives to the logic board have wide opaque plastic
loops attached. If you grab these, swear a lot and pull firmly, you can
disconnect the cables from their ports on the board and the drive assembly
lifts out.
If you get this far you've already shattered your warranty in a thousand
pieces. So what the hell.

Fear of cache compatibility ranks right up there with fear of System 7
compatibility as an overblown "problem." I've rarely had a problem with
either, and the ones I've had have been promptly corrected.
I decided I wanted a Quadra during the Summer of 1990 (had to rent a
Mac+ in the interim but it was worth it). I got my Quadra before the
stores had demo models. I did have one or two cache compatibility
problems before info-mac/cp/quadra-auto-cache-22.hqx came along last
December (actually, I had the updates pretty much taken care of before
then--I've only rarely had need of the cdev).
You'll find more software that's not 32-bit clean than incompatible with
'040 caches (assuming you get the current versions of things). Heck, my
daughter even plays games dating from 1987 that work fine (we have more
problems with old games requiring 1-bit color depth than we have with
cache compatibility).
Order the Quadra so you'll have time for it to get "old" before you
become unhappy that you didn't wait 6 months for a Cyclone (see the July
Vaporware column).

Subject: Re2: Supra's BBS
Two days ago I reported:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
... I just purchased a SupraFAXmodem V.32bis
package from Mac's Place (took 2 weeks for them to work through their
backorder
queue and get it to me, may be in stock now). Nice unit, except:
1) I can't get it to connect to any fax machine.
2) It works OK when talking to a V.32 USR dual standard modem (i.e., 9600b)
but behaves very badly when attempting to connect to a V.32bis USR (i.e.,
14,400b)
3) If it ever goes into retraining mode (as shown by "RE" in the very nice
status display) it never seems to recover and eventually drops the
connection.
The tech support person said the a "new ROM" would be distributed to all
registered owners by mid-summer to improve the retraining behavior (3). He
also offered to send me an exchange unit to fix problems (1) and (2) -- I get
the exchange unit, use the packaging to return mine, no charge to my credit
card or shipping charges (unless I don't return the original unit!). Seems
very civil -- but I haven't received the exchange unit yet, which was promised
by overnight delivery last week.
What are other peoples' experiences with the SupraFAXmodem V.32bis?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Wouldn't you know it, the next day an exchange unit arrived by overnight UPS.
It fixed problems 1) and 2), and 3) hasn't reoccurred. It did drop a
connection once, but that could have been due to any of a number of external
causes (e.g., crosstalk in my house phone wiring).
Some test downloads from a V.32bis USR modem/CISCO
router/ethernet/Sparcstation
achieved the following rates (14.4kbps connection):
1,628 cps(char per sec.) zmodem binary file (Disinfectant 2.9)
3,033 cps zmodem text file
1,561 cps zmodem .Z file (text compressed 55.73%)
(The last one is an effective text transmission rate of 1561/(1.0 - 0.5573)
= 3,526 cps, which means that it doesn't really matter whether you compress
and download, then uncompress, or let the modems do the compression/decompr.
on the fly).
I also sent faxes to three machines successfully, retrieved the output from
two and examined it -- very clean output.
I also got an email msg from Supra tech support, apologizing for the delay in
shipment of my exchange unit (end of month and 4th of July confusion) and
offering assistance.
I got two positive reports from other users, including the following from
ht6...@usma6.usma.edu (Creamer Timothy CPT):
One final note is that the Boston Computer Society is using the V.32bis Supras
for 6 of its 12 lines with great success.
So, I'm a happy camper. Looks like I got a bum unit the first time, but the
excellent tech support from Supra more than made up for it. Good show,
Supra.

Subject: SAM search string for ChinaTalk trojan
As part of Symantec's commitment to virus protection, it is our responsibility
to inform you that a new Macintosh Trojan Horse was recently discovered,
called
ChinaTalk which affects all Apple Macintosh computer systems. It claims to
be
a female sound driver that is MacInTalk compatible.
The Trojan Horse is a system extension that will erase your hard disk.
Owners of SAM Version 3.0 can instantly update the detection and protection
capabilities of the program against this new Trojan Horse by entering the new
virus definition into SAM Virus Clinic. In conjunction with the new SAM User
Definition and SAM 3.0, you will be able to scan for ChinaTalk from both Virus
Clinic and SAM Intercept.
UPDATE DETECTION INSTRUCTIONS
Open SAM Virus Clinic. From the Options menu select "Advanced Menus". Select
"Add Definition (Resource)" from the Definitions menu. Now enter the
following
information:
Virus Name:ChinaTalk
Resource Type: INIT
Resource ID: = 0
Resource Size: = 13392
Search String: HEX F9FA554F3F07486EFE704EBAFA12
String Offset: = 13328 FROM START
Please type in the search descriptions without any spaces. As a guard against
incorrect entry, SAM 3.0 has a "Check" field in the definition screen. If the
above information is entered correctly, your check field should be: 3453
After you've entered the above information, click "Add" to add the definition
to SAM. This information should be added to the SAM User Definitions file
located in your System Folder.

About 18 months ago I took a poll on info-mac and APS was the hands
down winner of that unscientific survey. I have since bought three
drives from them, and I'm a happy camper. There tech support staff is
patient, knowledgeable, doesn't leave you on hold forever, calls back
when you leave a message, and doesn't push product at you. Quantum
drives are excellent, but my experience is that you can rely on whatever
APS tells you about the difference between Quantum and Maxtor (they'll
happily sell you either or wait for you to think about it). APS is not
the cheapest vendor, but they have an exceedingly good reputation for
support--they'll tell you whether they've got what you want in stock,
they won't bill until they ship, and on two of my three orders the drive
arrived before they said it would (the third was merely on time :)

We have several macs in our lab including a quadra 900. This machine has
never seemed to function well. It runs at about half the speed of an fx. We
also have a quadra 950 and it is very fast.
When we first got the Q900, the apple hard disk drivers were replaced
with the FWB hard disk tool kit drivers and things were ok for about a
week. One
day the Q900 froze and we were unable to restart. It was returned to the
dealer who said their were mixed speed RAM chips in it and tried to blame us
until
we showed them the order that specified that they had installed it.
Anyway, it has never worked well to this day. We put exactly he same
system on the Q900 and an fx and the fx boots and runs _over_ twice as
fast as the
Quadra. We've tried everything we could think of over the last month or two,
including reinitiallizing the hard disk and replacing the apple drivers but
nothing helps.
Does anyone have an idea as to what could be wrong? At this point I'm
planning to return it before the warranty expires.
Please email me directly if can think of anything to try. thanks in
advance.

Yes and no. There are 2 versions of NCSA Telnet. One uses MacTCP and will
co-exist quite happily (including the ftp server) with any X implementation
you
care to run. The other uses NCSA's own tcp/ip package and won't let anything
else on the computer use TCP. So if you use the MacTCP version things will
be just fine.
The NCSA version is a holdover from the days before MacTCP. The only reason it
still exists is because we (NCSA) haven't bothered to site license MacTCP,
and because some people bitch about having to set it up (MacTCP), but the
limitations are severe enough that it (the NCSA tcp/ip version) may be
retired.
