iMovie
Ruddell
When I download a video from Youtube (flv) and play it with VLC it works
fine. When I export it from iMovie the video works fine on other programs
but the sound is gone. Any idea what's going on with the audio part of the
file?

If you used Share->Export using QuickTime..., the Options button
for a number of formats takes you to a dialog in which it is possible
to enable or disable audio. Double-check you settings!

I tried looking through that but it seems when I import an flv file to iMovie
the sound just vanishes. Doesn't even play in there either by importing or
dragging the file over. Totally lost on this one (for now)...

Hmm... I have some flv files I created using Final Cut. iMovie
won't let me import those at all! QuickTime Player also refuses
to open them.
This is using iMovie 7.1.1 and the latest QuickTime player.
I suggest you use iMovie->Provide Feedback to request a fix!

You need to get the right codec to allow FLV import.
For example, Perian includes such codec (see www.versiontracker.com for
more information on where to get it)

That seems to have worked. Thanks to you and the rest who suggested that
one. It's odd as I had it installed yet not the latest version but it works
now.
And of course there's always another problem. When I upload the file to my
website it works fine on the Mac side but that file won't play on Windows...

That's probably a function of the client's browser. I don't think the
standard Flash browser plugin loads and plays .flv files directly.
You could always have alternatives such as QuickTime and whatever is
current on Windows (.wmv? .mpeg? - don't know, don't really care!)
If you have Adobe Flash (the actual authoring tool), you can create
a .swf object that can be embedded in an html page, which will make
it possible for users to view your .flv files without having to install
extra plugins. There are numerous skins available in the Flash
environment that allow you to create simple video players very easily,
without a great deal of background knowledge.
