WON'T CONNECT!!Sportster33.6/Mac 6116/8.0/freeppp 2.6.2/

Hi,
I have a mac 6116 running system 8.0,Free ppp 2.6.2 , a Sportster
33.6,and a Best data "Smart one".when I use the Sportster,It abruptly
drops connection about 3/4 of the way through the handshake (It
connected twice out of 35 or so tries).When I use the Best data it
connects about 40% of the time usually hanging after the handshake than
returning a link dead message(sometimes it takes 20 or so attempts)Or
says the conn was terminated as it was not a reliable one..Occasionally
it hangs on authentication an returns a message about an invalid
password.A new trick this past week during initialization It says modem
did not not respond to initialization and offers me the option to use
generic initialization (which I authorize) and it sometimes connects.I
have it set to autodetect init string (Sportster worked and Best data
usually worked in different house) Ive replaced phone adapter and
extension (its long),Tried ppp,reinstalled free ppp ,played around with
different init strings,tried rebooting between connections,different
speeds,all is well at the ISP,I cannot test the line as this is the only
computer in the house, THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY (oops sorry) as well as
embarassing as I used to be a tech at an ISP , connected thousands of
macs, and cannot fix my own! Can someone please help¿
