I am considering buying a MacBook to replace my current PowerBook G4 later in
the year (if/when Leopard is delivered). What I am pondering -- does anyone
know that if I also get an iPhone, whether I can then piggy back an Internet
connection (I know, it's AT&T's panned Edge Network) off the phone? Any
information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm fairly sure this cannot be done.

The iPhone is capable of joining WiFi networks, and mine is configured
to join my in-home 802.11n router while I'm here. But when it's not in
range of a faster WiFi link the iPhone falls back to AT&T's EDGE
network. There's no provision for it making that accessible outside the
device, and I'm pretty sure it would probably violate the terms if it
could be done.

I wonder why. My old Motorola V265 cell phone will function as a modem
using either Verizon's free (slow 14.4 kbps) network or their faster
network.

I don't understand why it would violate any terms if it could be done.
Why would AT&T care if you are using the internet connection directly
from the phone or from your macbook via the phone?

One would have to look at the terms to see. Not understanding why isn't
much in the way of proof. And besides, I could easily imagine a possible
reason. If you accessed the network for other computers via the iPhone,
that might mean that you would use the network (and presumably cost
AT&T) more than if you didn't have such use.

I have no idea whether the conditions prohibit this or not. I just don't
think that the "I don't understand why" bit holds much water. Much
better to actuallu look at the terms (which I dn't have handy, nit
having an iPhone).
