I've got a power Mac Performa 5260, System 7.5.3 with ConfigPPP 2.0.1and
MacTCP 2.0.6 - should I switch over to Open Transport since it's the newer
one? How do I go about switching to OT? Which version do I use?
Primarily I was interested because ICQ works only with OT... also, will
this jeopardize my IP settings with my school (my internet access comes
through my school)? Is it just a case of getting rid of ConfigPPP,
installing OT and then manually entering the settings? I'm always nevous
to tinker with my settings (I just don't understand IP and protocal and
all this stuff).
My school says that they will eventually have a package for OT and OS8
that I can buy.
If ConfigPPP and MacTCP work together - what do I need to work Open
Transport? What are all the components, and how should I go about getting
them - download all of them, or does Apple have them on a disc I can buy?
Also, how do I go about updating my system software - do I have to update
to 7.6 and then 8 (and eventually 8.1) or do I update straight to 8? Is 8
still over $100? (I'm a student with not much money). any helpful
websites, too, please
Thanks for your help!

OT and OT/PPP are available from Apple, in ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/
follow the paths down to the networking and comms dir, and then the OT dir.
FreePPP is available from your nearest Info-Mac mirror, or the source, Rockstar software:
http://www.rockstar.com/ppp.shtml
When you set up FreePPP it will read your current settings and carry them over. It's a neat little util.

OT is actually installed with System 7.5.3; you just need to look for a
little application called Network software selector (check Apple
Extras). The different version of OT that exist are each specific to a
particular version of MacOS (more or less). I think MacOS will convert
your settings (as best it can) when you switch (using NSS, anyway).
Note that ConfigPPP is not connected to MacTCP (from the system's
viewpoint). If you switch to OT/PPP you'll have to re-enter your
settings there.

ConfigPPP may or may not work with OT (I don't remember), but there is
OT/PPP, designed-- by Apple-- to work specificly with OT.

MacOS 7.6 and 8.0 are each UPGRADES while 7.6.1 and 8.1 are UPDATES.
Upgrades cost money, while updates can be downloaded. Upgrades do NOT
require the presence of any previous OS. I bought the 7.6 CD from
someone on usenet for $20 about a year ago. I think I've seen OS8 CD
for $50. But also check around campus; perhaps some kind soul it your
campus computing dept. will burn a CD-R copy of the OS8 CD for you;-)

Don't mess with your System Folder if everything works. You'll be sorry for
a long, long time while you'll be trying to fix all the extension conflicts
you'll run into... and while you'll be hoping you'll Performa will boot one
day again.
I had a several months long, nightmarish experience arising from a
seemingly innocent TCP/IP-PPP tweak attempt similar to your idea. (Yeah, I
have CC, it didn't help squat). I wasted SEVERAL HUNDRED HOURS fixing the
endless chain of conflicts. (My Mac has many extensions for various
peripherals I use.) I had more crahes than stars on the sky, and I'm an
experienced Mac guy who resusscited various people's Macs more than 2000
times in 10 years.
Once again: if the system works - don't touch the Extension Folder with a
ten-foot pole. It is Apple's worst-ever application of an otherwise sound
concept. It's so crappily implemented, one wonders if they didn't contract
it out to Microsoft.

Version 1.1.2 is the numerically highest version available for free
downloading from Apple's FTP servers. It has been out now for some time
- about a year and a half I think. Long enough for it to have been
shown to be reasonably reliable (under "normal circumstances") with
versions of the OS which don't come with a higher version.
I have a feeling that I remember that 7.5.3 comes with version 1.1 of
OT. If you decide to take the plunge, you should probably consider
upgrading to 1.1.2.
> I think MacOS will convert

No - sorry, it doesn't. I've never heard if there's a good technical
reason why it can't copy over the existing settings or if this was just
an oversight - or perhaps a cost-cutting measure. I'm pretty sure that
upgrading from, say, OT 1.1 to, say, 1.1.2 will give you no problems
though...
Now that I think about, perhaps it is deliberate... The reverse will
hold true, ie that OT settings are not mapped back to Classic
Networking. If you go for OT and run into problems, swapping back to
Classic Networking should restore your previously working configuration
without breaking it as well. Well, it sounds plausible to me...
If you go for it, note down all your MacTCP settings before you run the
Network Software Selector.

If you are a subscriber to Mac Addict or Mac Home Journal, some of the
CD ROMs with their recent issues have provided the OS 8.1 upgrade, which
contains OT 1.3. Just drag the items you need (PPC or 68k, back to the
68030!) from the OT folder (bypass the installer, as it looks for 8.1
and quits of it is not there) onto your system folder, configure, and
go. I am running 1.3 on a C650 under 7.6.1 and it runs fine.

Before one gets all excited about OT remember there is a hardware issue with
5xxx/6xxx series macs that will not let OS8 or OT work. Go to apple's site
and download the 5xxx/6xxx tester before you do anything.
If you can though OT/PPP is much better then freePPP or confirePPP. IMHO
I could be wrong but I think that is the case

I don't agree, the 5260 shouldn't be affected by the hardware fault. Anyway
system 7.6 onwards has fixed the OT and is ok on all models of PowerPC ilk.
System 8.0 can be installed straight onto your system then add 8.1 FOC (on most
cover disks). Open Transport is installed when you install the system software.
You need TCP and PPP together (I know not why), each stores the different
settings required for connection to the Internet etc.
OT/PPP is not better than FreePPP, I have used both, but in sys 8.1 Apple have
used Remote Access to control PPP. It is not as user definable, if you wish to
increase your serial port speed you will need FreePPP 2.6.2 (it has a lot of
other options too, such as multiple account set-ups).
Having said that the speed gain is not a lot, but both are just as reliable.
OT/PPP may be better for the beginner or someone with little time to spare, as
there are not half as many options to sort out.
Any setting for the TCP and PPP set-ups will be supplied by the Internet Service
Provider you choose, pick one with Mac support - it makes it easier - if you can.

However, Macworld and MacFormat both come with cover-mounted CD's each
month and I think we've already had the UK 8.1 update. Maybe I'll give
it a look over the weekend.
Thanks for the tip Robert.

You should have said "hardware issue with SOME 5xxx/6xxx series macs (and I think
it's only the 52xx/62xx Macs, actually).

No doubt. Faster, more stable, easier to configure, easier to support. I no
longer offer any support for FreePPP mac users. Either install OT/PPP or you're
on your own. (I can solve any OT problem in 5 minutes max, FreePPP can take
hours and still not work.)
