I think that your modem, if its a USR courier, has fax built into it. Have
you explored these options? Im sure that in your init string, by setting the
proper S register, that you can have the MODEM discriminate between the two.

One other way, that i have seen working, is answering machines. There are
now answering machines that listen for the little "Im a fax" tone thats
emitted every 2 seconds. Then, if it gets one, it switches to fax, and
receives (i guess that would make it a fax machine more than an answering
machine?). The trick would be getting the default set to go to the modem and
switch to voice or fax, where appropriate.
