I am thinking about setting up PSInet access to the Internet for a BBS
and was looking for recommendations on service providers. I had looked at
PSI but am also interested in alternatives. Any experiences, positive or
negative regarding service providers would be appreciated ( I can't go
through the University of Texas, the admin for this region; they won't
set up connections unless you're educational).

Just IMHO, of course, but I'd recommend avoiding PSInet at all costs, even if
it means paying more to use a different service provider. PSI handles America
Online's Internet email, and because of them AOL email arrives anywhere from 5
minutes to 5 WEEKS after it's sent, and often it gets thrown in the bitbucket
and is never seen by human eyes again.

Also, PSI was the Usenet provider for MindVox, the NYC-based BBS that I'm on,
and the service was so poor that the sysops set up the system to print out this
when you type "PSI" at their Main Menu prompt:

Performance Systems International, Inc.
"We Lose News!"

Large newsfeed getting you down? Having trouble finding disk space for all of
it? Your worries are over! PSI delivers up to 100% LESS news than a regular
USENET newsfeed! While UUNET is filling up their customers' storage systems
with up to 40 megabytes per day, PSI is working hard to fix the myriad of
problems we've encountered from overselling our bandwidth by a factor of about
10 and hiring nincompoops to maintain our network. And since our routers
almost never function properly it means higher profits for US and less News
for YOU. So why invest $2000 in another gigabyte of hard disk space? Go with
PSI and make better use of what you have now!

Note the mild use of sarcasm above. :)
