What is yours? Which are your criteria of choice?
I'd appreciate, indeed, any comment...

----------
B. Browsers with RSS-handling capabilities, and extensions/plugins
specific to browsers
----------
That's not my preferred area. Don't hesitate to comment, update etc.
Here, generally the RSS feeds newslists will be shown like bookmark
lists (e. g. in the preferred bookmarks/folders pane), allowing to
directly jump to the selected news. A fast way of doing, that on the
other hand lacks flexibility (e. g. one cannot define when the RSS
checkout is performed, nor see which titles have already been read...);
also, one can hardly handle more than a dozen RSS feeds at a time...
Firefox
version: 1.0RC1 (oct04)

bookmark shows the entire list and you jump to the related piece of news
by just selecting it.

valid for all browsers.

I am *even less* competent here, please do comment / update...
Maybe some description criteria should be added here; for instance
"capacity to identify new titles wrt already visited ones" -in fact in
these "utilities", which are generally expected simpler than full-blown
applications, some are really "bare minimum" while others appear
extremely witty...

Amazingly, given the size of your list, you left out one: the browser
OmniWeb.
What's all the fuss over RSS anyway? Seems like a nice little idea to
me but nothing more than that.
I find the one in OmniWeb to be pretty much useless. It
just, as far as I know, tells you that an RSS feed has
been updated. It doesn't aggregate and show you a
summary.
> What's all the fuss over RSS anyway? Seems like a nice little idea to
> me but nothing more than that.
It's a very fast and organized way to look at summaries
and updates. I'd never have the patience (nor would I
necessarily remember) to check what's new at MacNN,
SlashDot, a half a dozen friends' blogs, etc. etc.
without NetNewsWire or the equivalent.
Admittedly, before NNW, I'd simply put the set of
sites that I liked to check regularly into a menu
in OmniWeb (and before that, Safari) and every day
I'd just go and tell the browser to open that whole
menu full of links in tabs. But RSS is *way* more
efficient.

The one I run does those things (5.1beta3). It's a better integration
than what Firefox has imo (as is the case with many things in Firefox),

Exactly: a good idea, but no big deal. Certainly it doesn't merit the
huge amount of hype it's getting.

Well. The mere fact there are 50+ different apps on the single mac
platform alone, is maybe more than a sign of hype.
For me RSS has increased the number of sites I daily check by a factor
5, for *less* time spent. Which is enormous.
This is the kind of thing, I know I'll never come back from.
> Amazingly, given the size of your list, you left out one: the browser
> OmniWeb.
I'll integrate it in the next release, but not immediately, as it is
already the second time I publish this list in one week...
Herve
actually a lot of folks would disagree. which is why it was created and
why the hype.
course the same thing happened with graphical web browsing, IM
programs, java, CSS, etc.
As a demonstration of just how carried away hype can get, this is pretty
impressive.
Either that or it means the hype is seriously out of control :) Such
things have been known to happen.
Btw I hope I was clear that I wasn't denigrating your efforts here. I
think you did an excellent job summarizing the current state of affairs.
What amazes is only that there's so much information out there for you
to gather on such a simple, if useful, piece of technology, of such
limited general utility -- little more than an efficiency hack really.
> course the same thing happened with graphical web browsing, IM
> programs, java, CSS, etc.
Many of which create the web page clutter and noise that one uses RSS
aggregators to avoid.
> What's all the fuss over RSS anyway? Seems like a nice little idea to
> me but nothing more than that.
What's wrong with nice little ideas?
> In article <1gn3jvc.1vji0ehrwigusN%use...@mile23.c0m>, Paul Mitchum

The RSS *lifestyle?* Hmmm.
If you'll re-read that message, you'll see that he's saying more or less
the opposite of what you inferred from it.
