Look for /Library/Desktop Pictures/Nature/Aurora.jpg.

Perhaps my opening posting which produced the above responsewasn't phrased
well.
I'm using an add-on system preference "Visage" which allows one to select a
login screen that differs from the default which comes with Snow Leopard. The
Visage control panel allows one to import pictures which can then be selected
within that control panel to be used as the login background. One of the
options is "Apple Default". The remaining options are the pictures one has
imported into Visage as alternative login screens. What I am trying to deal
with is that when I select Apple Default I don't get the Aurora picture but
Aqua Bllue.
If you need to change login Background
Go to HDD/System/Library/coreservices/DefaultDesktop.jpg
(change the DefaultDesktop.jpg image with yours note the file Name
should change it should be same "DefaultDesktop.jpg")

Does it really matter, when you can easily select the right one manually?

How? I received a message that "Core Services cannot be modified".
Fred
You cannot drag and drop files into CoreServices. You must physically
delete a file, type in an administrator's password and then replace the
file.
you should have a admin account
