Just starting with the last couple of Netflix DVDs, they come up with English
subtitle enabled, which are difficult or impossible to turn off! I got them
off last week, but can't do it today.

I thought I remember either turning them off in the menu several times, or
maybe toggling them on/off/on/off etc., but neither strategy seems to help
tonight :-(

Explanation? Hints? It's really bugging me.

These are physical DVDs? And are these English sub-titles on an
English-language DVD?

Does this problem persist if you are logged in to a different user
account?

Answering a couple of helpful enquiries:

Physical DVD, in English, with English subtitles.

I can change the subtitles to French, for example, but not turn them off in
the same menu.

There is only one user on the system, so I can't try a different one.

Okay. What player are you using. Subtitles on a DVD are separate files,
and there should be an option to disable them, not necessarily on the
on-screen menu for the DVD, but in the setup for the player.

The hardware involved is my MacBook Pro, the software is Apple's DVD Player.
OS 10.10.4, DVD Player Version 5500.56, Framework Version 5.9.0.

I just found a "turn off closed captioning" menu item in DVD Player. I'll
see if that helps.

Someone suggested it was a setting in the App, and I found one to turn closed
captioning off. No idea how it got turned ON, but that seems to have fixed it.

It looks like it wasn't subtitles, it was closed captioning. Thanks all for
the suggestions.

DVD Player settings would be the logical place for that sort of thing.

Oh. But isn't the format very different? Don't those captions describe
sound effects as well as just translate the dialogue?

My nearest Genius bar is over an hour away. Fortunately, suggestions I got
here led to the dicovery that it wasn't subtitles, but that somehow closed
captioning had been turned on, so I was able to fix it.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Brian,
I was going mental with the same problem. Most replies on this thread don't understand what you're asking. You're problem is independent of the subtitle features on each disc. It's also ANY disc, not just Netflix. This worked for me: Your "Closed Captioning" has been turned on accidentally. Choose "Turn Off Closed Captioning" from the Features Menu. Good luck!
