I have an external 3com sportster, hooked up via serial cable to my G3.

OS 10 is not seeing the modem. What do I do?

Looked in system preferences but only the built in ethernet shows up.

I believe Mac OS X does not have serial port drivers.

Wrong. My Global Village v.90 modem has worked fine in OS X right along
since I started in OS 10.1.x. It has been attached to my B&W G3/300 via
Keyspan serial->USB adapter since System 8.5.1.

The modem is set up through the Network System Preference. You should
see the serial port listed under Network Port Configurations. It is
then just a matter of setting up the dial up account for that serial
port. You will choose the modem script during the set up. Modem
scripts are kept in the /Library/Modem Scripts directory.

Before someone else corrects me, the example I gave of the Keyspan
adapter is not a good example. Keyspan provides drivers for the
adapter. However, I believe that you will find that the internal modems
in Walstreet and Lombard PowerBooks, early iMacs, and at least the B&W
G3s are serial modems. I have not heard that they do not work.

Open Network preference pane in System Preferences and choose the
Network Port Configurations from the "Show:" section. What is listed
there?

This will only show the ports available, it won't show the device
attached to the port. You may have to place a check mark in the box
next to the serial port to enable it. Then you should be able to
configure the port.

There is also plenty of help right on your computer. You can use the
Help menu in the Finder. Search for "connect to the internet using
dialup ppp". It will guide you through the process. There is even a
Network Setup Assistant that will help you.

It doesn't support the serial ports for printing but it does for modems.
This is true not only for the beige G3 (the only desktop Mac with serial
ports that Apple officially supports for OS X) but also for older Macs
running OS X thanks to XPostFacto.

And adding the ability for the printing software to see serial ports is
fairly easy. Please see my site on serial printing at
<http://my.vbe.com/~mbrought/serial_printing.html>. Not all serial
printers can be made to work but there are many that work just fine in
OS X 10.2 or higher.

The show field has a built in ethernetr, and network port configuration.
In the middle, is a TCP/IP, PPoE, Apple talk, and Proxies.

TCP, you can configure "USING PPP, or manually.

Where do I go to place a check mark to enable a serial port, and choose what
type of modem to set up?

Thanks,

GE

Please reread my initial request from my previous post:

Open Network preference pane in System Preferences and choose the
Network Port Configurations from the "Show:" section. What is listed
there?

> TCP, you can configure "USING PPP, or manually.

You have chosen Ethernet in the Show field. Please choose Network Port
Configuration from the pop up menu. What is listed in the middle?

1) What is listed in show network port configuration:
on port configurations
CHECKED BUILT IN ETHERNET.

If I choose NEW I will get similar config. I have not tried Duplicate.
Delete is not highlighted.
