Hey Folks, lets have a little question for breakfast:
(STF faxsoftware used with a DoveFax)
Is there a program available able to convert e.g. TIFF,PICT etc. files directly
to faxfiles? The quality of graphics printed by some programmes and converted
by the FaxPrint-program is not very good.
A perfect reason for a brilliant converter!

As a follow up for this . . . how about software that would take the fax
"binary" and provide OCR to it? Most OCR applications can recognize TIFF
files, how about fax format files?

I'm in the process of writing an import/export filter for photoshop. I'm
also in the process of waiting for Dove to begin returning my phone calls.
The Dove/STF software doesn't create data-fork-only files for transmission,
and I'll be damned if I can figure out what the three resources do? Anybody
get further along on this?

Not too likely, judging from MacWeek. Dove's gone belly-up.

Calera Wordscan Plus can do this. It seems to work, although if the fax
is of poor quality then so is the recognition.

The latest MacWorld tried this with 8 OCR programs. The best program was
OmniPage Professional, but it's recognition rate was only 27%. The review
pointed out that you could get about the same results by randomly pounding the
keyboard.

Not exactly; they filed chapter 11 in order to be able to restructure
their finances. It remains to be seen whether they go belly up or
they come out of chapter 11.

Let's hope they can afford to pay STF to provide 32-bit clean
drivers, once they come of of chapter 11.

Currently, I am the proud owner of a receive-only Dove Fax + (since I
run my IIfx in 32-bit mode only).

Ummm. I've been a bit more lucky I guess. I get the best recognition on
text that originated from a Fax Modem driven by a Mac running ATM, though.
As for (the usual) faxed photocopies etc, I agree: OCR is not a lot of help.

Oh, btw, does anyone have a fax number from STF or knows about ther network
fax software (how much it is and where to get it?))

e-mail appreciated.

Cheers,

Oliver.

I have been using Caler WordScan with the faxes saved by my DoveFax modem and
have had excellent results even with low-res faxes. I have decided that it
is faster and easer for me to take typed articles for my newsletter and fax
them to myself and then use WordScan. So, all is not lost.
