I bought a couple of e-books at a Barnes & Nobel store last night. I
took home the receipt, logged onto its site with Firefox, and failed
to get past some windows to download them, or to send them an e-mail
feedback.

Switching to Safari solved that issue.

I also downloaded Nook for Mac (OSX=10.8.2), and installed it. When
I try to run it though, I only get the splash screen. After
Googling, I tried creating a NookForMac directory in my Applications ,
and copying the application to that folder, I tried running various
copies of the Nook application, with occasional success. I haven't
been able to figure out the "occasional" bit. It appears to be
random and rare whether it opens all the way. Renaming the
applications and folder haven't given me a clue with my experimenting.

Howard, I just tried my Nook for Mac on 10.8.2.

First time I ran it, all was good. But I closed it and couldn't get
past the splash screen.

So I logged out and restarted the machine and again ran it, and it ran
just fine. Closed it and then restarted the app and all worked fine.

So try a restart of your mac and then try the Nook app again.

If it is still a bit hinky, it probably is just going to be that way. :(

I rebooted, and tried running it 7 times. The third time worked, the
others didn't get past the splash screen.

Call support. Or get a Nook. I really like mine. :-)

The Nook app is quite buggy. The way to know that it shall actually
start is to watch a white diagonal line which goes across the Nook logo
over the word Nook. It it stops on the second O and K, it will start and
show your book library. It it doesn't stop, but goes completely across
the name and reappears, it won't.

Also, the Nook app often crashes during Synchronization with the Barnes
& Noble server as well.

I called support. It was worse than useless.

The reason I use Nook for Mac is to get a copy of the book on my
computer so that I can get it onto Calibre with the DRM removed and
where Spotlight can index it. I don't read books on my computer.

It is interesting that Barnes & Nobel's DRM uses as part of its key
the current default credit card number of the buyer. Since it *is*
possible to pay for the book at the physical store (which should get a
profit from my using it to browse through books) - I wonder what
happens when someone doesn't *have* a credit card on file with B&N's
web site. (When you buy it at the store, instructions for
downloading are on your receipt).

I've never bought an ebook at the B&N store as the closest one is just
far enough to not want to bother.

But the whole Nook ecosystem revolves around that credit/debit card on
file from what I can see. So it would seem that there has to be a way
to 'transfer' the in store purchased ebook to your Nook library and
attach the on file card to that purchase for the DRM.

As to downloading, well I just look in my Library at the B&N site and
tell it to download and it does it just like any other download. But
again, all my B&N books are in my library.

I don't use Calibre for my B&N books either, just for other books I've
collected over the years.

Here's a solution I found out about. Do a google search for 'nook
study'.

This is a little different application that does work and is very
similar to the Nook for Mac software.

I don't understand why there's a problem unless it's something to do with
iOS updates. IOS5 caused more problems for me again.

I haven't had any issues with my Nook for IOS app, just my Nook for
OSX app.

I had a program Epocrates on my Ipad that was updated and it couldn't
find network.

So I deleted it and redownloaded. Worked perfect.

Oh, apples and oranges. I would never want to read a book on my computer.
Too uncomfortable.

Oh, I don't either. I use e-readers on the Mac as a way to get the
e-book to my computer, where I can back it up, index it with
Spotlight, and, if necessary, break the DRM.

It works for me. I'm retired from University of Colorado, so I put
that in the setup.
