When I open a document with TextEdit I do not want it to be locked,
even if I last edited the document 10 years ago. I don't see anything
in the preferences to prevent locking of documents. Suggestions most
welcome, and TIA.

It's irritating, but it's only one extra click to get past it.

Maybe if you run a cron job to touch every file daily ?

Is it todo with Preferences > Time Machine > Options Lock documents ?
after last edit being ticked.

Thank you, thank you! I would never have looked there.

I agree that that's a dumb place to put that preference.

For the stated reason I am happy to have Mr. Hartley's reply, and I
have given no thought to where such a preference should be located, if
such a preference is needed at all. Thus I don't know if that's a dumb
place or not.

I haven't followed the various auto-save threads and I don't know
anything about it--what its purpose is, and the like. I know that I
don't like the loss of Command-D as a "Don't Save" shortcut for a
TextEdit, as I frequently make temporary notes in TE that I have no
need to save and I was quite accustomed to Cmd-W Cmd-D. The extra mouse
or trackpad click is an annoyance.

Ditto in my thanks to Mr. Hartley. Saved me from many more years of annoyance. Hurrah.

As for this comment:

There is a new short cut for the the "Don't Save" button (at least in Apple apps), and it is Command-Delete (just like sending a file to the trash). I was really bummed about the loss of that shortcut too, until I discovered that they just changed it! Silly buggers. Also, note that Microsoft apps for the Mac use a different shortcut for "Don't Save": "D". Yes, just hit the letter "D" when you're looking at the Save dialog box, and your document will be speedily disposed of.

Cheers.
