I am about to start importing my entire CD collection in to iTunes, can
someone please suggest the best utility for retrieving artwork from the
internet. I want it as automated as possible so that artwork is retrieved at
the same time as the track listings and once I hit import both the listing
and artwork are imported at the same time.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm using Sofa at the moment. It seems to be the best one for my setup
at the moment - I've copied all of my mp3 collection from CDs back to
hard-drive, and most of them need a CD cover.

Sofa connects automatically to the internet, downloads the appropriate
cover, then automatically assigns each itunes tune the album picture.

I use an Applescript that grabs a browser window full of Google Images
related to the album name. I just drag n' drop candidates into iTunes
from there.

You should also take a look at "Clutter", which is a very cool app.
It's on versiontracker.
