dear Mac experts: I am a switcher from linux and windows. I
downloaded the divx (I think community), and installed it. the
playback quality on a vidx encoded video is lousy, even though I have
also installed the vidx codec, too. I suspect it is selecting the
wrong decoder. so I would like to uninstall the divx codec. but how
do I now uninstall it?

[unfortunately, the chroma player which seems to be self-contained with
decoders (nice!) cannot open the files. my vidx files keep the audio:

file.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x 480, ~30 fps, video:
XviD, audio: (stereo, 48000 Hz)

what is the most transportable more compact hi-quality DVD-shrinking
format (keeping 5.1 audio) around these days? the variety is
bewildering. I am not trying to start an argument about what is best,
just a question about what is widely supported and maintains quality
while shrinking space requirements by a factor of 2.

This is a rather open-ended question. I have, contrary to your
experience, found excellent quality with both divx and xvid, while
shrinking a DVD movie to between 700MB and 1.4GB (depending upon the
length of the source and the framesize I select for the result). Rather
than employ the DivX codec from divx.com, though, I use ffmpegX to do
the transcoding.

You might also look at Handbrake, which is what many use to convert to
mpeg-4 for use on handheld devices such as the iPod and PSP.

As to uninstalling the DivX codec, it should be in either
/Library/Quicktime or ~/Library/Quicktime (depends upon what you chose
to do when you installed it). Remove and restart if in /Library, log
out and back in if in ~/Library.

Assuming you're tralking about a QuickTime component, it was probably
installed in /Library/QuickTime, or possibly in ~/Library/QuickTime.
Just drag it to the Trash if you want to get rid of it.

But I'm not aware of a "the" divx, so possibly you are referring to
something that installed more files. If you give more precise info,
someone might be able to give more precise advise.

Not at all my terrain :) But in general I'd say MPEG 4, DivX/XVid and
OGM seem the most used/interesting options.
