For those who have ClarisWorks docs that they like to open from time to
time, what is the easiest way to open them if you are now running El
Capitan? I have discovered that Pages will not open them and I do not
understand why Apple can be compatibles with numerous Microsoft word
docs but can't even read Claris Works or for that matter AppleWorks docs.

Thanks
Lyndon

Pages 4.x (from iWork '09) still runs in El Capitan and will open
AppleWorks 6 word processor documents (but not older versions).
Similarly Numbers 2.x with AppleWorks 6 spreadsheets.

Pages 5.x and Numbers 3.x dropped support for old document formats prior
to iWork '09 (including AppleWorks 6), but a more recent update at least
brought back the ability to read iWork '08 documents.

OpenOffice and derivatives (I've done this with LibreOffice) can read
AppleWorks WP/SS documents and possibly some of the other types (NOT
database), but I haven't explored whether it handles versions prior to
AppleWorks 6.

The other way I have to open AppleWorks/ClarisWorks documents on a
modern Mac is to run AppleWorks 6 in Snow Leopard Server in a virtual
machine. If AppleWorks 6 can't handle some older file formats, I still
have a working installation of AppleWorks/ClarisWorks 5 running on Mac
OS 9 on my PowerMac 8600.

Necessity. Microsoft Office documents are far more widespread.

AppleWorks had its final update in 2004. Apple provided a migration path
via iWork (at least for AppleWorks WP and later SS) through to the
version released in 2009, which got further updates until 2012. It
wasn't until late 2013 (Mavericks) that AppleWorks WP/SS import was
dropped with a rewrite of the iWork applications.

Hello Lyndon,

as David said, LibreOffice does a pretty goog job. However, the best
alternative would be Intaglio. It opens all CW and AW files, including
docs mixing text and images, without modifying anything in the original
layout. The catch is that it comes at a hefty price of $89...

I have both Intaglio and EazyDraw. Each are supposed to be able to open
AppleWorks vector drawings, but both will garble the drawings to some
extent. And neither is as easy to work with as
ClarisDraw/ClarisWorks/AppleWorks. It can be very frustrating trying to
convert old documents to a "modern" program.

I keep one hard drive with OS 10.6.8, so I can use AppleWorks 6 when I
need to do a drawing. Most times I'm working with old documents to make
minor revisions. If I have to upgrade to a machine that will not run
10.6.8, I'm in trouble!

Some extremely old documents can only be read on old versions of
AppleWorks that will not run on OS X. I have an old IBM running W95
with an early version of AppleWorks that will open the oldest stuff, and
can re-save in a format the OS X version can read.

Emulation. Run ClarisWorks in a classic Mac OS using Basilisk II or
SheepShaver.

I tried Intaglio and it says it cannot open AW6 documents

That's funny... It does the trick here, on a French Mavericks.
