Get the shareware application 'GraphicConverter'. You won't be sorry.

You can facilitate the process by setting Default App to open
Simple Text PICT files in the program of your choice.

More Info: Default App

If you're looking for a dedicated utility to make screenshots,
check out Screen Catcher and, unless you're running OS9, Snapz.

not to mention the humble app called PictureViewer
it may be cheap, but it works

Am I missing something? How do you save PICTs as JPEGs in
Picture Viewer, or anything else for that matter?

There is also a neat script available for GC that speeds up the
process:

Script for conversion from PICT to JPEG

PV will convert a PICT to (export a PICT as) several formats
e.g. File/Export/JPEG/Options
it's not as feature-packed as GraphicConverter,
but it lets you choose a target size or quality

It may require OS 9.x and QT Pro, which is what I have

Yes, it requires QT Pro -- the freeware QuickTime version does not have
an Export menu.

Clip2gif gets a vote, then. Apparently it's scriptable, and can save the
clipboard in a number of formats (very handy if you put your screenshot on
the clipboard directly).

There are at least two ways to do this:

1. Open the screen shot in GraphicConverter (shareware, $35) and convert
it to whatever you want. This will also work in PhotoDeluxe, Photoshop,
LE, Elements, and many other commerical and shareware graphics programs.

2. Instead of using Apple's built-in screen shot utility, try Snapz Pro
from Ambrosia, which will save the picture as a JPEG directly.

Oh, wait:

3. If you have Quicktime Pro, you can open the shot in PictureViewer and
save it as a JPEG.

And don't forget Ambrosia Software's (http://www.ambrosiasw.com) Snapz Pro,
which gives you a million options for taking screenshots, and will save them
in JPEG right off.
