I take note that the list of compatible camcorders on the Apple site is
way out of date.

I'd be very much surprised indeed if any modern DV camera with FireWire
did _not_ work with iMovie. Sony is a great proponent of FW, even though
they call it i.link, and the previous DCR-TRVxxx cameras have all
worked, AFAIK. I think you can be fairly safe. But many stores that
carry Macs also carry DV equipment. Check with one if you want 100%
reassurance.

Yeah, I've seen that too. :-(

My Sony DCR-TRV 340 doesn't show up on the list. (At least didn't when I
bought it more then a year ago.)
But...,
It works great nevertheless!

All of the Sony Digital8 camcorders seem to work fine in iMovie,
including iMovie 5.
But there's a caveat. The distinguishing feature of a Digital8 camera is
the ability to play old analog 8mm tapes as well as to record and play
DV on Hi8 format tapes. iMovie 5 (unlike iMovie 4) will NOT import
analog video from a Digital8 camera. (It works just as always with DV
Hi8 tapes.)

Apple's Firewire and Sony's i.Link are both implementations of the IEEE
1394 standard. The companies use different Trademarks, but there's also
an important distinguishing physical characteristic. Firewire uses a
6-pin plug that carries power, while i.Link uses a 4-pin plug that does
not. (i.Link cameras come with a 4-pin to 6-pin cable that ignores the
Mac Firewire port's power leads.)
