Yes.
Isn't it time to give up on Stuffit? Why does OSX still need this when
there is .gz and zip. Compatibility is a good thing.
I'm not convinced that Stuffit is a good thing. While waiting for OSX I
bought a Mac with OS 8.? and paid for Stuffit. The box said "Now with
20% better compression" That means compression wasn't that good to
start with.
Open Source code and standard compression algorithms are a good thing.
Stuffit expander handles .gz and .zip and most other formats, from what
I've seen when I download a file.

I've never used .gz but sit (standard) is much more efficient than zip.
A stuffed MYOB data file is one third smaller than the zipped version of
the same file. This ratio holds for every MYOB file I have noted.
Different sorts of files will not show the same ratio, but I have never
yet encountered a zipped file smaller than its stuffed counterpart.
No, actually -- all the terminal does is act like a tty attached to the
computer. One ordinarily has it run a shell, like bash, and then you
can invoke other unix commands, like tar and gunzip, etc. But That
requires that something be aware of all the separate programs that are
needed and which to call based on the file type. Interestingly, the
command line tool "open" does just that. Amazingly, when I type "open
xxx.gz" Stuffit Expander appears in the dock, and we're back to
where we started -- i.e. stuffit opens all them files.
I will admit that on other unix systems I had many different utility
programs each of which handled one or more of those suffixes, and I knew
which to call. Those programs are also installed on OS X, maybe even by
default, but I don't have to worry about which to call because there's
this neat free-as-in-beer program that handles it for me -- stuffit
expander. The same great program I used on my pre-OS-X macs. I even
supported the developer by buying a copy of the deluxe version. Seemed
only fair to support other programmers, since that's the way I made my
living.

Depends.
If you're an experienced unix user and know which program to
use for which purpose, then there's really not much of a reason.
If you're migrating to OS X from OS 9 and have little experience with unix,
then having a familiar tool that does the job without your needing to
understand the details makes it seem like a macintosh.
One of the things I learned decades ago as a programmer is that the
computer is better at remembering and doing simple tasks than I am.
It's nice to have a program I can drop a compressed file on to have it
decompressed and saved, and downloading one is easier for most of us
than writing one.

The only reason I use Stuffit is because other people might send a
Stuffit file my way, so I want something to expand such a file.
Also, if I know those same people prefer to use the many options in
Stuffit to handle their large incoming files from me, it would be
considered 'considerate' of me to send them a Stuffit file.
I will agree that Stuffit is overpriced, and presently I do not have
any Stuffit product except their expander that came with Panther.
The reason I am trying to update the Stuffit expander _only_ is
because I want to use their competitors product named "Impression"
which only costs $25.
Because of political considerations probably, the screwy folks who
created "Impression" made it so that Stuffit Expander was necessary to
expand their software !!!
Problem is, the expander that is included with Panther is a slightly
older version that screws up the 'executable' bit on all expanded
programs, so the very latest version of expander 8.0.2 is necessary.
So Aladdin gets a crack at every dummy like me who tries to download
their supposedly free expander, making it essentially impossible to
download the expander _only_ .
They hope I will tire of trying, and buy their overpriced product.
To aggravate the situation I find myself in, I accidentally erased my
original post here plus any responses to that post :(

Yipes! - sorry fellas I goofed there, Impression is a competitive
product to Retrospect, _not_ Stuffit.
Sorry about that.
