Simple iTunes question...

Embarrassing "newbie" question. As long as I've been using Macs (but not
iTunes much), I can't figure it out...

I downloaded a podcast .mp3 file and want to add it to iTunes.

I dragged it and dropped onto the iTunes window. It didn't add it to the
library.

I dragged it and dropped onto the iTunes icon. No joy.

I tried the "Add to Library" option under the File menu. I can select the
file and click the "Open" button; no joy.

The file is not corrupt nor malware. I can listen to it in Finder using
"Quick View" (pressing the space bar).

I know it must be simple, but it escapes me.

And it's not hiding in "Podcast" or other folder in iTunes...

I think you have to add podcasts by entering the URL it comes from. The
'Advanced' menu has a 'subscribe to podcast' option that brings up a
window where you enter the URL. I know that doesn't help with the one
you've downloaded already, but could be useful for the future.

I came home tonight and quit iTunes and dragged-and-dropped the file onto
iTunes icon. It worked this time.

The file shows up in Music Library pane and I successfully down-converted it
using the Advanced > Create MP3 Version option.

*Why* iTunes imported it this time, I cannot explain. I do not understand.

I always down-convert my speech audio files (such as this one) by choosing
Advanced > Create mp3 file (which, since the file is already an mp3, creates
a new file using the parameters I specify in Preferences).

So once the file was successfully imported, I tested its validity by doing
the conversion on it and the resulting (smaller) file is also valid.

All's well that ends well.

DaveC said he "down-converted" it. I expect the MP3 was a relatively
high quality and he wanted a lower quality (and smaller) copy for use on
a portable device. In iTunes, you do that by adjusting your import
settings in iTunes > Preferences, then using the "Create [format]
version" command in the Advanced menu.
