I download podcasts which I transfer to my iPod. They get there, which
means they are getting into iTunes, but I can't find them. I have a
Podcasts directory in iTunes Media, but it doesn't seem to get anything
added to it, although it does contains some podcasts that got there
somehow.

It seems to me any downloaded podcasts ought to go into the podcasts
directory. What determines whether they do or not and where do they go
if they don't go there?

Open your iTunes folder, then open iTunes Music, and try the Podcasts
folder that's in there.

Methinks the Podcasts folder from the directory one level up (mine's
empty) is a leftover from a previous iTunes version.

even easier (and more reliable) is right-click the podcast in itunes
and pick show in finder.

The path to the location of the file should appear at the bottom of the
Summary tab of iTunes' Get Info dialog.

The directory in iTunes Media is actually an alias to the podcast
directory in iTunes Music. They both show the same contents. I created
the alias because I wanted additions to get stored in the podcast
directory.

Thanks. They are in iTunes Media/Downloads/Podcasts, but why? They
used to go into the iTunes/Podcasts directory. Is it possible I have a
setting wrong somewhere?

Oh, in the iTunes Media/Podcasts directory the podcasts are mp3 files
named for the podcast. In iTunes Media/Downloads/Podcasts, they are
directories named for the podcast containing a file named download.mp3.

I suspect that there should be a step where they the download.mp3 files
are moved to the correct place in iTunes Media/Podcasts but that isn't
happening. Should it?

Yes. There is a setting in iTunes Advanced Preferences that does this.
Somewhere along the line I turned that off. It is working now but I
have to rebuild my podcast stuff just to be safe.
