I need to export a sub-set of my bookmarks so somebody else can load
them.

If I do an export bookmarks in Safari it creates a huge html file. If I
open it in Safari I can't edit it. While I could edit it with
TextWrangler, it would take a long time and be prone to all sorts of
possible errors.

Is there any sort of way to export just the set of bookmarks of interest?

Select the bookmarks in Safari's Bookmark window and drag them into a
TextEdit window. If the format of the TextEdit window is rich text, they
will appear as hypertext links (blue underlined labels) as in a web
page. If the TE window is plain text, they will appear as URLs ("http://
. . .") without enclosing angle brackets, as they will if dragged into a
BBEdit window.

Dragging the bookmarks onto the Desktop will produce individual Web
internet location (webloc) files that can then be dragged en masse into
a plain text window or one at a time into a rich text window.

MS Word and Nisus Writer gave similar results.

This works but not the way I wanted. However, it gave me another
solution. I opened the html file in LibreOffice and was able to select
and cut out what I didn't want. I could then open the edited file in
Safari and open directories and click on URLs as desired.

I have not been able to "open in tabs" from this source. I have to open
each URL in a tab, which is slower. Nor have I been able to import the
revised file. Nevertheless, it is a start. If necessary, the other
user could open the individual URLs and bookmark them in his own
browser. There aren't that many.

You can edit in Safari (delete all but the ones you want to export
under Show all bookmarks). But in your case, edit it under a different
user on your machine (make one if needed, this is often diagnostically
useful) so you do not muck up the one under your username

I hadn't thought of that approach. It would work, but as you say, I
would have to do it as another user. I guess I would export my
bookmarks, log on as another user, import the bookmarks, edit them and
export them again.

That would make them loadable. LibreOffice seems to be quicker but I
can't reload the HTML file for some reason or another.

To export, just drag your bookmarks sub-set to the Desktop. To import,
the reverse operation.

Regards.

That may be the best approach. However, each URL produced an individual
webloc when I tried it.

I found I could drag a folder of URLs to the desktop from Safari's "Show
All Bookmarks", rename the folder, and drag it back again. Each URL
still retained its original hypertext links.

Then I tried dragging individual URLs into a new folder on the desktop,
and was able to drag that folder back into Safari's list of bookmarks.
That also worked, and may be the easiest answer to Robert's problem.

I was not able to find a way to export a select group of URLs. If you
want to end up with an HTML file that can be opened in Safari, and
should be able to be imported, try this:

1. Export Bookmarks from Safari.
2. Open a blank Word document.
3. Drag the exported Safari Bookmarks.html file into the Word document.
4. Edit the file to delete all unwanted URLs. You should be able to
edit captions and titles as well.
5. Under Word's File menu, select "Save as Web Page..."
6. Be sure you have the Web Page (.html) Format selected.

This approach may work with LibreOffice or OpenOffice, but I did not try
it.

Drag and Dropping into new Finder window or desktop DOES NOT WORK. File just reverts back to original position.
