Apple has a hardware solution for this. It costs $20 and requires you
to write an analog image to an external DVD. Then the DVD has to be
read back in for editing.

Is there an app that can do this directly? I checked VersionTracker and
there are too many DVD programs to find out which, if any will do this.

I understand removing the protection from the digital image is illegal,
but converting it to analog and back to digital is okay. It should be
possible to do it internally.

I assume from the above that you're only talking about m4v files with
DRM (copy-protection is not a required feature of mpeg-4 video).

You might be able to accomplish what you want using Snapz ProX
(ambrosiasw.com). The only time I've messed with removing the
protection (an intellectual exercise), I just played it as if going to
a TV (the AV out) and had the AV cables going to an EyeTV unit to bring
it back in. That actually worked quite well.

Yes, DRM. Your solution is no different from running the output to a
DVD recorder using the $20 cable from Apple. I am looking for a totally
internal solution, and obviously, it has to be less than $20. In fact,
since I can write a DVD for about $0.30, it has to be almost free.

I only have one movie I am trying to get to DVD, Truth in 24. I
originally recorded it from an ESPN broadcast, but it had a score crawl
underneath. Then I got it again from Speed, but it had a little Wrecked
icon in the upper right hand corner for about 2/3 of the movie. The
iTunes download is clean and I would like to use it if I can.

Thanks. I am downloading now. However, it says it is from ESPN, which
I already got directly from ESPN, so I am afraid it may show the score
crawl. We'll see. If it doesn't, great!!

Well, yeah, these things are recorded from TV. Sorry, I didn't look up
it's provenance, it just seemed to have the most "seeds."

The comments indicated it did have the score crawl so I killed it.
Besides, Vuze didn't seem to be doing anything.

I am not at home and I cannot wait while it downloads. Apparently,
torrent downloads can take days.

Heh. That's not my experience.

Well, it sat for many minutes without doing anything and when I checked
the comments concerning Vuze on VersionTracker, one said it took "only"
four days to download 500Mb, which the author thought was very quick. I
concluded it would take an inordinate amount of time to download Truth
in 24.

How fast should it be? I don't really have any idea.

I have done it with the following equipment:

-iPod Classic 80GB
-iPod composite video cable (not Apple's $50 cable, but a compatible $8
cable bought on eBay from a seller in Hong Kong
-Canon ZR-40 Mini DV camera with on-the-fly analog AV -> digital
conversion
-FireWire cable
-iMovie and iDVD

Do you have any or all of the above at your disposal?

My tv downloads usually max out my broadband connection, 5 Megs. A
one-hour show is about 350 megs, and I get around 600K/sec, however the
arithmetic comes out. Of course, the more popular the material, the
more seeds there are, and the faster your download speeds will be. There
are some ways to "tweak" it of course. Obscure or less popular torrents
take longer. I've given up on some stuff.
