Best way to set ID3 tags for directory of MP3s?

I have a number of MP3s that I'm bringing over from my PC. Often, the
files within a particular artist directory have inconsistent "artist"
tag, sometimes the tag is even blank.

If I import the whole directory tree, it's difficult to fix up the
MP3s in batches, as I don't see any way to group all the files in a
directory together. So the ones with blank "artist" tags are all at
the end, where I'd need to sift through them one by one and see which
directory they're in under the Info tab.

I can work around this in iTunes by keeping the music library empty,
and drag over one directory at a time, set all the artist tags to the
same value, then delete them from the library. But this means I have
to postpone listening and playlist construction until this is all
done.

Is there a faster way, either by grouping by directory in iTunes, or a
command-line way to change the artist tag in an MP3? Then I could
write a little shell script to loop through a set of directories and
set each artist tag to the directory name. I'm new to Applescript so
if that's the answer, does one like this exist?

Thanks,
John

I recommend using mp3rage to fix these sorts of problems.
