I made an inadvertent couple of changes to some Calendar events. So I
deleted ~/Library/Calendars and restored an older one from Time
Machine. Now my entire Calendar is blank - nothing at all remains. No
accounts, no events, nothing.

I also tried restoring the ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Calendar*
folders from Time Machine. Still nothing.

What am I supposed to do to get my Calendar back the way is was an hour
ago? I wasn't expecting this to be so difficult.

I never did figure out which file(s) I needed to restore to get my
calendars back, so I ended up going the nuclear route and restored my
entire ~/Library folder from Time Machine. Mail had to spend 15 minutes
re-importing all its messages but at least I have my calendars and
events back.

I never would have guessed restoring Calendar data from Time Machine
would be such a pain.

Wasn't it possible at one time to restore Calendar events using the
Calendar interface from within Time Machine itself, the way Mail does?

I rest my case.

There is? I don't see anything about it in the menus. Calendar help has
nothing about an internal backup feature. A Google search isn't
turning up anything for me, other than a way to manually export and
save calendars as an archive; which is not really the same thing as a
backup.

Can you tell me anything else about that? I had been using Time Machine
and I had expected (perhaps erroneously) that Time Machine would have
easily been able to help me revert some inadvertent Calendar changes. If
you can tell me what I should have done instead of using Time Machine to
back up my Calendar data to an easily restorable format I'm all ears.

By that logic, practically everything on the system has a "backup
mechanism" because you can make copies of things you want to save.

Ha ha. Good one. Doing what is effectively a "Save As" manually is
Calendar's built-in backup. Who needs Time Machine for anything? Just
do an hourly manual Save As of every one of your files.

Why does that not surprise me.

Well good for you.

Apparently Apple considers it the same. I just chose Export > iCal Archive
from iCal (yes, I really am using an old system) and the progress window
said "Saving backup." Also the file had the suffix "icbu," which I presume
to mean "iCal backup."

I guess it was my own mistake to assume that Time Machine would have
been helpful to easily back up and restore Calendar data. I will make
regular manual backups of it. Hopefully I can figure out how
to automate it.

So is there any other Apple app that handles personal data, that Time
Machine won't help me with backing up?

Huh? I can restore Contacts data from within Time Machine using the
Contacts GUI. Time Machine and Contacts are fully integrated.
