Any advice appreciated.
Use the OSX DVD player instead? It can play VIDEO_TS folders too.

Not in 10.4 or 5....it proclaims it is not a movie.
That brings me to: Just what CAN play Video_TS on a hard drive on Mac OSX
10.4?

dvd player and vlc both do. it sounds like the video_ts folder isn't
valid.
I'd suggest that is more than likely your problem with VLC too, then.
Why bother archiving it if you hate it that much? It plays DVDs, I can
use my remote with it, personally that's about all I need of a DVD player.
DVD Player will play VIDEO_TS folders on both my 10.4.x machines
(800MHz G4 iMac and 800MHz G4 PowerBook) and my 10.5.x machines (dual
2GHz G5 PowerMac and 2GHz MacBook), so long as they are valid VIDEO_TS
folders.
The behavior you describe for VLC matches what I've seen with an
invalid VIDEO_TS structure -- attempting to play that structure with
DVD Player got an outright refusal to even load it. Neither app gives
what I would consider a good error message; however, if I attempt to
burn said folder in Toast 8 (or 9), it tells me that the VIDEO_TS
structure is damaged.

I can play it on absolutely every player in Linux and Windows...just not on
the Mac.
PS
I will these these hypotheses by authoring the video_ts with various
programs and report back. I do not author these files on the Mac.
DVD Player
Front Row (in 10.5)
VLC
At least, they play every Video_TS I have ever ripped or been given.
Problem with the chapter structure?
Perhaps the chapter structure of the program I am using....but it never
appears a problem in a dvd player, on any player on the Mac or under Linux.
Note the following re DVD Player:

I will not go into technical details, but this turns out basically correct.
Although the Video_TS folder was valid enough for players under Linux and
PC, VLC and iDVD would not play the file. Some corrections made it
universally playable.
Thanks for the suggestions.
